In Kollaboration mit dem re:publica Festival für die digitale Gesellschaft organisiert Music Pool Berlin in diesem Jahr den Trial & Error Space am 8. Juni 2022:

Diverse Ansätze hatten schon zum Ziel, das Internet wieder dezentraler zu gestalten. Was jetzt im Rahmen der, teils hitzig geführten, Diskussion um das dezentrale web3, NFTs, DAOs etc. deutlich wird: viele Creator, damit sind Produzent*innen, Kreativarbeitende, Künstler*innen, Musikschaffende etc. gemeint, teilen dieses Ziel und experimentieren im web3. Aus ihrer Sicht bedeutet Dezentralität, dass sie keine geschlossenen Silos mehr wollen, die mit ihren Daten (bzw. ihren Produktionen) betrieben werden – ohne jegliches Mitspracherecht. Ferner fordern sie eine faire Kompensation für ihr Werk jenseits der Null-Komma-Beträge pro Click oder Play von den Plattformen, wie Youtube, Spotify etc.. Für die Creator hält das web3 vermeintlich attraktive Monetarisierungs-Ideen bereit: Von Artist-Tokens, über NFT-Kunst bis Blockchain-basiertem Musik-Streaming. Apropos Fairness und Mitsprache: Wie wäre es denn, wenn das web3 eine technologische Lösung für kooperatives Wirtschaften und die dafür notwendigen demokratischen Beteiligungsprozesse bereitstellen würde? Dezentrale autonome Organisationen (oder kurz DAOs), so meinen ihre Befürworter*innen, haben das Potenzial, diese in der analogen Welt äußerst komplexen administrativen und nervenaufreibenden basisdemokratischen Prozesse zu automatisieren. All diese Verheißungen sind aus Sicht der Kurator*innen legitim und wünschenswert.

Technologischer Treiber für den jüngsten Anlauf zur Schaffung eines dezentralen “web3” sind die vielbeschworenen Blockchains. Und da fangen die Probleme an, da die meisten Blockchains noch immer eine miserable Ökobilanz aufweisen. Die neue, weniger rechenintensive proof-of-stake-Methode (PoS) soll diese deutlich verbessern. Allerdings verwendet Etherium, die für das Minten von NFTs derzeit wichtigste Blockchain, noch immer die rechenintensivere proof-of-work (PoW) Authentifizierung. Ein anderer kritischer Diskursstrang arbeitet sich, antikapitalistisch geprägt, an dem vermeintlichen Hauptziel des web3 ab, der totalen Inwertsetzung alles Digitalen (quasi diametral zum älteren Peer-to-Peer-Ansatz des Teilens). Als Projektionsfläche dient die Pixelkunst der NFT-Bewegung, die inzwischen auch den hochpreisigen, tradierten Kunstmarkt erreicht hat.

Die Kurator*innen meinen, dass das web3, trotz berechtigter Kritik, einen Raum verdient, in dem es weiter imaginiert, analysiert und mit ihm experimentiert werden darf, Trial & Error eben – und zwar in einem respektvollen Rahmen, ohne Bashing und Shaming.

What if the web3, with its automatized decision-making processes and direct distribution and monetization channels, could offer a real alternative to the current Internet of monopolistic platforms and data silos? Imagine for instance a cooperative where music producers work together with curators, formerly known as music journalists, and technological enablers for music publishing and distribution. Would that work with DAOs, tokens, and NFTs? Do we actually need blockchain-based technology to establish a fairer and cooperative economy, or are there alternatives that are more sustainable?

We want to discuss such an alternative economic scenario in the series of Music Pool Berlin Community Evenings with music producers, economists, tech experts as part of a speculation with an open outcome. The only guidelines for the discussion are mutual respect - no shaming, no blaming. Because dreaming must be permitted and the Web 2.0 as we know it deprives and restricts us. Let's explore for our music realm what we want to transform and how.

What are the current and future potentials of currently evolving decentralized web technologies for music, particularly from a musician perspective? This evening conversation shall give an introduction to and overview of the so called web 3 – and how people apply the technologies to music. We also aim to discuss potentials of the space for musicians and inspire imagination – and hopefully address all questions that you may bring to the table.

What exactly changes through web 3? What are NFTs (non fungible tokens) and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations), how do they work, and why are they interesting? How can they change how we make music available, make money, and organize ourselves in music scenes? What current applications are being built that are applicable to music? Do those techs hold yet again a potential to democratize and shift power structures, and what's different this time?

We hope to hold a conversation that is interesting to all of you who may have only heard buzzwords and want to understand more, as well as those who wonder if they should now publish their music as NFTs or have some ideas for organizing their scenes in a DAO, to those who are already building new tools and ways to organize.

After the talk, there will be drinks and music and space to connect and get to know each other.

The conversation is organized in collaboration between Music Pool Berlin and Music Tech Germany.

Mathew Dryhurst is an artist and researcher based in Berlin Germany. His research focuses on technical and ethical protocols. Together with Holly Herndon, he hosts the Interdependence podcast. He makes music and creates art with Holly Herndon, and their albums ‘Proto’ and ‘Platform’ (4AD) have provoked international critical acclaim. He teaches at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Strelka Institute and European Graduate School.

Oscar Atanga is a British-born Cameroonian electronic artist, producer, DJ, and creative strategist. He releases music under the moniker O.N.A. At the start of 2021, Oscar joined B.A.D. (Black Artist Database, formerly Black Bandcamp) as the Partnerships & Strategy Lead. Prior to moving to Berlin, Oscar worked in worked in London in entertainment marketing and artist management. Oscar also holds a Law degree from the University of Oxford.
