Sandra ist Songwriterin, Produzentin und Performerin. Mit ihrem Soloprojekt „Polar Noir“ tourte sie bereits an der Seite von Bands wie M83 und Cari Cari und spielte Konzerte in Deutschland, Polen, Österreich und Dänemark. Anfang 2025 veröffentlichte sie ihr Debütalbum „Coming Up For Breath“, auf dem sie verträumten, shoegazigen Synth-Pop mit Umweltthemen verbindet. Das Album verschaffte ihr weltweite Aufmerksamkeit und rotierte in den Playlisten von über 100 Radiosendern. Parallel dazu ist sie als freiberufliche Musikjournalistin, Radio- und Eventmoderatorin tätig. Seit über zehn Jahren moderiert und kuratiert sie die Musiksendung „Chelsea Hotel“ beim Münchner Radiosender egoFM, mehr als die Hälfte der Zeit leitete sie dort auch die Redaktion. Für ihre Sendung führte sie Hunderte von Interviews – u.a. mit New Order, St. Vincent, Girl in Red oder Peter Doherty. 2020 wurde sie für ihre Arbeit mit dem Deutschen Radiopreis in der Kategorie „Beste Sendung“ ausgezeichnet und von der Jury mit folgenden Worten gewürdigt: „Chelsea Hotel ist ein Kleinod, das nicht nur für Unterhaltung sorgt, sondern Lust auf eine Musikrichtung weckt, die im Radio selten zu hören ist. Sandra Gern zeigt auch, dass Musikmoderation lässig und faktenorientiert zugleich sein kann.“ Sie kennt die Musikbranche demnach aus unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven – und versteht es, ihre vielseitigen Erfahrungen und Skills nahtlos zwischen den Bereichen zu übertragen.

Many musicians rely on social media when it comes to communication, promotion, and growing their audiences. On the few popular platforms they are dependent on the given business practices and at the mercy of intransparent algorithms and their changes. While this dependency on a very small number of private platforms as communication infrastructures has always been problematic, many musicians currently struggle more than ever with the question of how to organize their communication, now that the biggest social media companies have pledged their allegiance to the new US government.

Is social media a reliable tool for musicians’ means of communication? What alternatives are there? Can musicians leave the platforms or will the reduced attention make them irrelevant? What’s a good long term strategy? What are ideas for diversifying communication strategies in music? What are experiences with online communities, chat groups, newsletters, radios, press outreach, offline communication etc.?

We look forward to discussing ideas and experiences of communicating as an artist, and to having a clearer orientation afterwards around how to approach outreach and communication in this day and age.

Panelists:

Steffi von Kannemann (she) - is co-founder of the Berlin music agency Better Things, who has been running the PR and marketing campaigns for Rosalía, Caroline Polachek, Mø, Aurora, a.m. Additionally Steffi is working on diverse projects, connecting international music players with Germany. She is giving workshops and speaking at conferences. Steffi was also co-founder of Parenthood in Music, the first initiative in Germany to improve the working conditions for parents in the music industry.

Zoë Mc Pherson (they) - is a French/northern Irish artist, performer, sound designer, spatial sound shaper, DJ, curator, and founder of SFX label & interdisciplinary conspiracy. Mc Pherson has developed an arc of accomplished albums and EPs. Alongside their releases, Mc Pherson has performed live and DJ'd at a steady stream of esteemed events and venues across the world from Berlin's CTM Festival to MUTEK Mexico, The Hague's Rewire to Novas Frequências in Rio de Janeiro. Mc Pherson's own node within the global information exchange is SFX, a multimedia platform they founded in 2020.

Mimi Mitina (she) - is a Berlin-based indie-pop singer-songwriter and ukulele player originally from Ukraine, who is also organizing Music Producers meetups in Berlin; community manager, ex-co-founder of øhr.

Marek Tuszynski, Executive Director and co-founder of Tactical Tech, is an artist, designer and curator working at the intersection of technology and activism. Marek is also a filmmaker, producer, teacher and provocateur whose creative interventions span media from film and radio to television, books, exhibitions, public spaces and the web. For 30 years, he has worked at the intersection of technology and politics, information and activism, and the consequences of living in a quantified society. In 2023, Marek was recognised by Mozilla Rise25 Awards as one of the artists and visionary leaders actively shaping a more ethical, responsible, and inclusive future for the internet.

Moderation & Co-Curation:

Ivo Sloman (he / they) - is a Berlin- and Hamburg-based musician with a background in different fields of media. Ivo also builds instruments, virtual ones – e.g. for NI’s sampler Kontakt – and real ones, one of which has already been played at Elbphilharmonie. Having been part of different bands and projects over the years, nowadays Ivo mainly performs and produces dreamy electronic music under the moniker Korora, currently finishing the debut EP.

Make Like A Tree (he) is a quintessention of travels expressed in music and visuals created by Sergey Onischenko – an artist from Ukraine who is touring round the world and spreading his indie-folk tunes with a touch of non-conformism and beat generation ideas. Soundscapes of Make Like A Tree will bring you to inner worlds of nature, woods, mountains and songs of whales on the bottom of the ocean. Usually performing as a live act, for us Make Like A Tree will play a selection from his sublime vinyl collection.

Niklas Mündemann studierte Saxofon und Instrumentalpädagogik an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen und ist seit 2017 als selbstständiger Musiker und Musikpädagoge tätig. Er hat mehrere Alben veröffentlicht und Konzerte in ganz Europa gespielt. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit verschiedenen Labels und Agenturen weltweit konnte er ein starkes Netzwerk aufbauen und unterstützt seit 2023 andere Künstler*innen dabei, sich professionell im Musikmarkt zu positionieren.

Um diese Arbeit zu intensivieren, gründete er 2024 die Agentur psst!, mit der er Musiker*innen in den Bereichen Releasestrategie, Management, Förderakquise und Musikmarketing begleitet. Zudem ist er Gründer und Vorstandsvorsitzender des Vereins Klimper Klang – Musik Inklusiv e.V., der sich für barrierefreie Musikangebote für Menschen mit Behinderung und mehr Inklusion in der Musikszene einsetzt.

So how to make a good (subjective of course) living nowadays with your music? The secret is that there is not one way to succeed. You have to figure out what works for you. How to adapt both mentally and practically, and figure out how you can use your talents to make a living, and simultaneously pursue and fulfill your dream.

I have been living out of music for the last 40 years, and have tried almost all fields in a constantly changing the music business as a DIY-thinking person.

Taking the starting point in my own story, I want to share with you what I have learned along the road, and I will run through what possibilities there are to get to live out of doing what you love the most, and how to put a career together so it fits YOUR personal needs and dreams.

Maikol Piardi is a digital creator, podcast host, community founder, and music marketing coach with Italo-Panamanian roots. He has dedicated over ten years to the Italian music industry, taking on various roles such as hosting club nights and festivals, as well as organizing events. After completing his master's degree in Trade Marketing and business strategies and gaining experience in the fashion industry and sales sector, Maikol decided to relocate to Berlin to further pursue his passion for music. In 2019, he launched Music Travel Guide with the intention of showcasing Berlin-based musicians, producers, and founders. Over time, it evolved into a media platform and Club Membership for music enthusiasts, artists and musicians, helping professionals advance in their careers. Ich freue mich, meine Erfahrungswerte mit Musiker*innen teilen und sie auf ihrem Weg begleiten und beraten zu können. In meinem Interviewformat „Über Erfolg“ durfte ich mit Musiker*innen über die Chancen und Herausforderungen sprechen, die es mit sich bringt, von der Kunst zu leben. In meinem Sachbuch „Lügen ist scheiße“ beschreibe ich den Musik- und Lebensweg der Pop-Pionierin Cäthe und beleuchte, wie man es mit den Strukturen der Musikindustrie aufnehmen kann – oder womöglich gar nicht muss. Aude Langlois ist eine Klangkünstlerin, Musikerin und Sounddesignerin aus Berlin. Sie hat einen Master-Abschluss in Sound Studies an der Universität der Künste Berlin und einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Musik und Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Paris-Sorbonne. Ihre Arbeiten sind in Filmen, Dokumentarfilmen, Theater- und Musikproduktionen zu finden. Als Performerin spielt sie Gitarre, Akkordeon, analoge Drum-Machine und handgefertigte Geräuschmaschinen mit Granular- und Delay-Effekten, um experimentelle Klangtexturen zu schaffen. Als Tutorin und akademische Beraterin (UdK Berlin, Catalyst Berlin) ermutigt sie das Zuhören als wichtigstes Mittel zum Lernen und Verstehen.

Zusammen mit Belinda Sykora ist Aude im Duo Ekheo aktiv. Gemeinsam erforschen sie künstlerisch die Beziehung zwischen der menschlichen Stimme, Technologie, künstlicher Intelligenz und der Ethik des Klangs. Sie erforschen diese Themen durch klanglich-visuelle Performances, bei denen Improvisation und Anpassung an die Umgebung eine entscheidende Rolle spielen.
