Creating and releasing Sample Packs can be a rewarding process for artists, giving both new life to existing work, and developing an additional income stream. On platforms like Splice and Bandcamp and everything in between, electronic artists can release sample packs made of their own sounds and share them with the world. In this workshop, participants will turn one of their own tracks into a themed sample pack ready to be packaged and sold. Participants will have the option of sharing their sample packs with the other workshop participants.

Target audience: Intermediate music producers curious about how to make their own unique and distinctive sample packs

Workshop requirements: Participants to bring a laptop with a DAW installed, headphones, and a recent original track from which to make samples out of.

Content: Participants will be walked through the technical and conceptual considerations of creating a cohesive and unique sample pack from their existing work. This will include hands-on time within which to process and package the samples, as well as legal considerations and an overview of potential marketing opportunities and vendors.

In this artist talk with Sam Slater we are curious to talk about experiences in making music in collaboration - for film, games, installations or theatre. What does it mean to make music and sound in resonance with another piece of art or creative work? How do you approach composition and sound design differently in collaboration with different media and productions? Like for example – what are the differences in working for a film or for a game? And what works differently at the different levels of budget and scope? How to approach creative practice and creative strategy in long term projects?

How do you approach collaboration? How do you see collaboration as a creative practice? How much do you see your work as a service or your own artistic work? What are best practices of communication, so that all involved understand each other well?

How do you approach composing and sound design for different productions creatively? What are different work processes?

What would be your recommendations for artists who seek to work for film and games and other productions? Where to start and which skills are important?

There will be space for your questions as well, so come prepared.

Sam Slater, a two-time Grammy Award-winning composer, sound designer, and music producer, is renowned for creating immersive soundscapes in various mediums such as installations, games, films, and stage productions. Notably, he won multiple Grammy Awards for his roles as score producer and musical sound designer for "Joker" and "Chernobyl." He also received accolades like an SCL Award for 'Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media' for "Battlefield 2042" and an Icelandic Music Award for 'Producer of the Year.'

Additionally, he scored projects like "Guerrillas" and "The River Between Us" in 2020, and in 2021, he collaborated with Hildur Guðnadóttir on the soundtrack for EA Games' "Battlefield 2042." In 2022, he produced the score for "A Haunting in Venice" and scored the Bohpal gas disaster for the Netflix series "The Railway Men." Slater has released solo records with Iceland’s celebrated label, Bedroom Community and premiered an immersive mixed-media installation called "Vandals" in collaboration with visual artist Theresa Baumgartner at CTM Festival in 2022.

Always aspiring to be versatile and challenged, Slater has showcased his creativity through live performances, both solo and in collaborative projects like OSMIUM, a project focussed on self-built instruments and robotics. He toured a live immersive performance of Chernobyl in 2019. Slater's compositions have been featured in performances by prestigious orchestras like the LA Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. His musical journey began in his teens with record production, followed by studies in Experimental Composition at Leeds University. He started his professional career in Germany, initially collaborating with Johann Johannsson as a principal musical sound designer and creative engineer. Slater consistently engages with the experimental music scene, collaborating with friends and artists such as James Ginzburg, Hildur Gudnadottir, Rully Shabara, and others in Europe and beyond.

Pamela Schlewinski studierte Theaterwissenschaft, Filmwissenschaft und Philosophie und arbeitete als Regie-Assistentin für Castorf, Schlingensief, Marthaler, Gotscheff (u.a.) an der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Als künstlerische Produktionsleiterin widmete sie sich Groß-Projekten wie ÜBERLEBENSKUNST am HKW oder dem Kunstfest Weimar mit dem Schwerpunkt Performance und Musik. Mit dem bildenden Künstler Paul McCarthy arbeitete sie 2015, bevor sie mehrere Jahre für die norwegischen Künstler Ida Müller und Vegard Vinge tätig war (Nationaltheater Reinickendorf). Seit 2019 verantwortet sie als künstlerische Produktionsleiterin und Dramaturgin die Commissioned Works beim Pop-Kultur Festival.

Em Burrows is a music producer, qualified educator, and music industry professional from Western Australia. She has worked in the Australian music sector for almost 20 years in many roles including ‘Audience Development Officer’ at West Australian Music. She is also the founder of ‘Avalon Berlin’; an international development program for West Australian artists. Community, connection, and a holistic approach is at the heart of Em’s practice. Her broad experience in creative strategising and management enables her to help artists get to the heart of their own artistic and professional intentions and to develop actionable pathways towards sustainable long term creative careers. Em is particularly passionate about empowering, educating, and supporting female artists.
As well as being a self-managed independent artist, Em is a record label owner (Group Therapy Records), community leader and gender equity advocate (Girls Rock! WA), experienced radio broadcaster, and podcast host (Wide Open Road: The West Australian Music Podcast). In 2022, she was nominated for Western Australia's most prestigious industry award, the Gold WAMi, for her contribution to the local music sector.

Creating is hunting.

Hunting for sounds, hunting for beats, hunting for inspiration. This workshop is intended for songwriters and artists who wish to explore sampling as a creative tool. In the workshop Asaf Eden will share his unique workflow, developed in over 15 years of working with samples both live and in the studio. Following Marshall McLuhan´s saying that “the medium is the message” we will see how sampling offers an unconventional , often anti-establishment way of creating music that resonates pioneering movements in modern art. We will “hunt” for samples together and create the foundation for our own sample library. This workshop combines theory and hands-on practice. It is recommended to bring a laptop and headphones.

For whom?

The workshop is intended for creative people who wish to explore another avenue of expression and familiarise themselves with sampling, conceptually and technically. There is no need to have experience with sampling or to own a sampler.

By who?

Asaf Eden is the songwriter and producer known as Ryskinder. For more than a decade of musical activity he has been using samplers both live and in the studio.

Performer, poet, video artist and music producer Asaf Eden was born in Jerusalem in1983. He has been fusing experimental sampling and traditional songwriting In more than a
decade of musical activity under the moniker Ryskinder. His musical career saw the release of 7 studio albums on different international labelsand extensive touring the Middle East and Europe, including as support for Mac De Marco, Dirty Beaches and Psychic Ills, he is currently living and working in Berlin.

Aude Langlois ist eine Klangkünstlerin, Musikerin und Sounddesignerin aus Berlin. Sie hat einen Master-Abschluss in Sound Studies an der Universität der Künste Berlin und einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Musik und Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Paris-Sorbonne. Ihre Arbeiten sind in Filmen, Dokumentarfilmen, Theater- und Musikproduktionen zu finden. Als Performerin spielt sie Gitarre, Akkordeon, analoge Drum-Machine und handgefertigte Geräuschmaschinen mit Granular- und Delay-Effekten, um experimentelle Klangtexturen zu schaffen. Als Tutorin und akademische Beraterin (UdK Berlin, Catalyst Berlin) ermutigt sie das Zuhören als wichtigstes Mittel zum Lernen und Verstehen.

Zusammen mit Belinda Sykora ist Aude im Duo Ekheo aktiv. Gemeinsam erforschen sie künstlerisch die Beziehung zwischen der menschlichen Stimme, Technologie, künstlicher Intelligenz und der Ethik des Klangs. Sie erforschen diese Themen durch klanglich-visuelle Performances, bei denen Improvisation und Anpassung an die Umgebung eine entscheidende Rolle spielen.

Audes Beiträge zu verschiedenen Projekten wurden auf dem BFI Flare Festival (London), dem Transmediale Festival (Berlin), Gaité Lyrique (Paris), Signs and Symbols (New York), CTM Festival (Berlin), ACUD Theatre (Berlin) gezeigt, Festival Rio LGBTQIA+ (Rio de Janeiro), Arte (Frankreich & Deutschland), Sky TV (UK), Westflügel (Leipzig), Märkisches Museum (Berlin), Hosek Contemporary, Berlin, 48 Stunden Neukölln (Berlin), Galerie Barbara Thumm (Berlin), AMRO (Linz), Pop Kultur (Berlin).

überblicken das Business aus verschiedenen Perspektiven. Angefangen hat alles mit klassischem Bandleben und europaweiten Touren – dann kamen das Schreiben sowie Produktionen für nationale und internationale Acts hinzu. In einem Zeitraum von
drei Jahren konnte er als Autor über 100 Wochen Titel auf Top30 Alben platzieren und insgesamt über 10 Mio Streams erreichen. Seine Produktionen schafften es in das Fernsehen in US, UK, JP, in alle deutschen TV-Sender und erreichen ebenso 7-stellige Zahlen im Streaming.
