8. Nov: Community Evening - The Management Hypothetical @ Most Wanted Music

On November 8th we did a little experiment during our community evening, hosted as part of the "Most Wanted: Music" conference. The discussion was moderated by ADAM TOWNSEND from APRA AMCOS, our partner for the night. Inspired by Geoffrey Robertson's "Hypotheticals" TV series in Australia, we decided to explore the decision-making process of an imagined artist's career with the helpl of some expert managers: ROWAN BRAND - Founder and Director of Tribe Management and ALESSIA AVALLONE - Founder and Director of Language of Sound.

We created a fictional character, Sarah the great, and asked to our two guests for the night, both music managers, how would they have managed the development of such artist. What came out was an interesting and stimulating discussion, which highlighted two different and both valuable perspectives on artist management: one more flexible and heavily focused on music, while the other one more structured and with a more dense timing schedule.

However, what we want to do, is to hihlight here a few suggestions, useful for both managers and artists, that came out of the discussion:

Look out for gigs, as much as you can

Playing live is always a good way to test your sound, and to become accostumed to have an audience. Start with small venues, then move progressively towards bigger ones, do small tours, maybe as a support act of a bigger artist

Do radio shows

Radio shows are having a huge comeback, and they are a great opportunity for an artist to showcase your taste as selector

Use social media in a sensible manner

Unfortunately is hardly to avoid social media in these days. But the good news is: you don't have to be aggressive. There are ways to develop a sensible way to communicate online, and remember: is a great way to connect directly with fans. If there's a social platform that you prefer over the other (i.e.: Instagram, Twitter) try to focus on tha one

Focus on music

For Alessia, music comes first: if you're an artist, take your time to develop your skills, your artistry and how you want to present yourself to a broader audience. If you're a manager, allow your artists to spend time with their crafts: it will benefit both in the end

Is not enought to have a nice song

Rowan pointed out a critical issue: sometimes, music is not enough. The way you tell your story also plays an important role. Marketing must not be forgetten here. Something that Rowan likes to go with his artists, is to create nice and engaging mailing lists, maybe with a trck to download. He pointed out how social media, despite being a direct and easy way to communicate with fans, might fall out of fashion after a while, while mailing list can be something that grows consistently

Don't be afraid to ask

Ask for help! To everyone who can give it to you

Open new income streams

Nowdays, we all know that selling music is not a reliable way to earn money. Be creative: try to look for new income streams: merchandising, for example, can be not to expensive to produce and bring some cash back to your pockets ;)

If you've followed our page this summer, you'll surely be aware that we launched a campaign to create a sound logo for our brand. On our last community evening, we took the chance to explore a bit deeper what soundbrandig is, how artists can exploit the more marketing oriented side of music to have commission work and make money of that, and how this later spot might also pose some issues in terms of ethics. Guests comprised our partner for the sound branding competition, Christian Mix-Linzer from Tracks & Fields, music supervisor Niko Floss and artist Queen Alaska.

But we know that all you want to hear is the name of the winner of the competion... and here we go: Ettore Carcano, a BIMM student, was the one who grasped the final prize! His unique mixtures of different music styles and background noises embodied perfectly the spirit of Music Pool Berlin. Well done Ettore!

Tue 23. October Sound Branding & Award Ceremony Music Pool Berlin Soundlogo

This evening on sound branding will start with the award ceremony for the Music Pool Berlin sound logo. Music Pool Berlin launched the competition Sounditup to submit a sound logo for Music Pool in July. Out of all contenders, 15 people were selected to participate in a masterclass on sound branding with Christian Mix-Linzer of the music synch agency Tracks & Fields. Having edited their sound logo idea based on what they learnt in the class, a winner has been selected out of all participants by the Music Pool team together with Christian. The five best Sounditup submissions will be presented and the winner will receive an award.

In the second part of the evening, a panel of communications professionals and artists will talk about the essential ideas and elements of sound branding, of developing sounds for brands. The conversation will explore both the professional possibilities of working in sound branding, as well as explore various examples of sounds for brands. How do you approach the development of unique sounds for a brand to convey its essence and values? Apart from a sound logo, which other components of corporate sounds can exist? What are currently interesting examples of brand sounds? What are best practices in sound branding? How does the collaboration between brands and musicians usually work and how can artists engage in sound branding jobs as part of their overall portfolio?

We are happy to present the premiere of freshly produced music videos, as outcomes of an intensive workshop led by the film director Stephanie von Beauvais.

This Music Pool x Shoot It Yourself Community Evening will premiere and discuss the videos, and look behind the scenes of conceptualizing and producing a video for your song. How can you make your video a quality short film in itself, and not just an inevitable visual byproduct to your song? How can you create an interesting video yourself on a small budget? What are basic filmmaking skills that you need to know? And what are the experiences of musicians that have just gone through the process of shooting a DIY video?

The second part of the evening will discuss the relevance of music videos in post MTV times. How important are music videos for the promo of a song these days? How do promoters and musicians use music videos in their album or track campaigns? And is a music video only being perceived as a promotional tool or how do audiences appreciate music videos as an art form?

Steph von Beauvaisis a Berlin based director and producer of music videos, documentaries and commercials with more than 20 years experience. She has collaborated with German musicians and bands like Tocotronic, Beatsteaks, Olli Schulz, Marteria, Casper, Laing, 2Raumwohnung, Kreator and several more. She teaches at HTK Berlin and her own music video workshop series.

Michael Mlinskihas more than 10 years of experience of developing marketing campaigns for musicians, such as Drangsal, Marilyn Manson, Ferris MC, or Denzel Curry, currently with Vertigo/Capital, and formerly with Caroline International.

Food For Thoughts: things we learnt at our Mental Health Community Evening with DBS Music (pt. 2)

June 2018 will be remembered in the history of Music Pool Berlin as our Community Evening for that month was settled in one of the best location we ever had for an event so far, namely the sunny riverside of Funkhaus Berlin. Partnering with music production school DBS Berlin, our panel was dedicated to the topic of Mental Health and Creativity. Guest speakers included producer and electronic music artist Emika, artist manager Andy Inglis, head of artists management at K7! Rachael Patterson, and philosopher and counsellor Florian Goldberg; our own Andrea Goetzke was in charge of moderating the talk.

Writer Dee Cunning has summed up for you some of the issues and suggestions made by our panellists. Things we learnt at Music Pool Berlin x DBS Music Mental Health Community Evening

Create a good routine

Never underestimate the power of a good routine – not only to become successful, but to safeguard your mental well-being. Whether you have the self-discipline to create your own work structure, or you need others to help you with that, it’s essential to stay deadline-motivated and take a proactive role in your career. One of Rachael’s clients, for example, took the initiative to request a weekly schedule for the whole of the coming year. She was positively surprised!

A great way to add some structure and support your lifestyle is to get a part-time job, Rachael reiterated: “It can actually be helpful to have a part-time job because you feel more committed to doing what you love in your downtime – especially if you have a job which gives you both the routine and flexibility to do these things.”

Networking is essential

And our panellists meant networking in both senses of the word: having a strong support network of close friends and family and striving for like-minded business connections. Although Emika described herself as sometimes feeling like she’s “on an island” having taken up so much responsibility for her business, she also stressed the importance of having a great team.

“You need advocates,” she insisted, “you need people that go into the world and say, this person is really good… People either hear about you because someone’s talked about you, or they hear your music, or they hear your music and then people talk about you. That’s how you generate some kind of buzz and some kind of opportunity and doors start to open.”

A quick fix won’t make it go away

There’s no avoiding it: the music industry has a drug and alcohol problem. As Andy pointed out, using alcohol to cope with stress has been normalised. “You don’t get dentists who get nervous and have a couple of shots of whiskey before they take someone’s tooth out,” he said, “but we seem to think it’s okay to do that – to get drunk before you have to do your job – because it’s so ingrained in this culture…and you’re strange not to do that.”

And where quick fixes are concerned, reaching for medication isn’t always the best option either. After anxiety meds numbed her Glastonbury experience, Emika reflected, “you should never need to go and take some medication in order to go on stage.” “That’s the thing about mental health,” she continued, “it’s so easy to just be given some drugs, or you get given a list and told to go and find a therapist, [but the therapists are all booked up] so you just don’t do it and it’s much easier to just take a tablet.”

So, what about the ultimate feel-good pill: success? Unfortunately, according to Florian, the gratification of achieving your ambitions will never be a bandaid to your problems. One of his clients believed that fame would heal the wounds of his traumatised past, he told us. “Then, all of a sudden, he had all that. He was on TV, his posters and advertisements were everywhere, the CDs were out. He had all of what he always wanted, but then he realised he still feels shit. The pain is still there, nothing has changed from the inside.”

The best way to deal with mental illness, in Emika’s book, is taking the time to proactively ask questions: “practise being in touch with yourself and looking inwards and try to understand your emotional world.” And, of course, to keep creating: “It might knock you down for a bit, but if you keep writing music, it can keep you connected to yourself. I think that’s how I’ve managed; I’ve never not written music. I always had a feeling that that’s what was going to save me and keep me going.” The rest is all about communication: talking to those close to you and working to find a therapist who really listens. Remember, healing takes time, patience, and commitment.

The Music Pool community evening will provide insights into the music scenes in Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines – from musical styles to organizational aspects. Potential ways of collaboration for Berlin based artists with the music scenes in Southeast Asia will also be a topic.

The evening is organized on the occasion of a group of female artists and cultural producers from Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand visiting Berlin and the Pop-Kultur festival, organized by Goethe Institute in cooperation with Missy Magazine.

Speakers:

Alyana Cabral (Manila, Philippines) is a musician, writer, and film score composer from Manila. For seven years, she has been performing all over the city as a singer and multi-instrumentalist for several bands. She is currently the vocalist and guitarist of garage folk outfit Ourselves the Elves, as well as keyboard and percussion player for psych rock group Shamanism. Her forays with sound art and electronic music fuel her experimental solo project, Teenage Granny. Alyana has made music for a handful of films, such as Cinema One Originals 2016 Best Film awardee, “2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten,” and Regal Entertainment’s horror film, “The Debutantes,” wherein she got nominated for best musical score by FAMAS 2018. When she goes home to her bedroom with just her guitar, she writes political songs for her folk project identity. Aside from performing, Alyana also organizes live shows, mostly (but not exclusively) for female musicians and female-fronted bands. She has recently founded Kababae Mong Tao, a multimedia platform aiming to empower women of all colors and expressions. Alyana believes in sisterhood solidarity, male involvement, faeries, woman-moon synchronicity, and the power of dreams.

Amanda Keisha Ang (Singapore)is known for her work behind Singaporean all-girl art and music crew ATTAGIRL! championing electronic music for women in Asia - on her own, Amanda has been quietly but actively pushing her own initiatives and shows. When she isn’t DJing or doing music promotion with her bass music collective BAOWBAOW, she spends her time teaching illustration, creating artwork for like-minded music aficionados, music journalism, learning tattoo and cooking. As a music lover and DJ, her palate spans across various genres of Classic House, Techno, Hip-hop, Soul, UK Garage, Dancehall, Grime, Footwork, Jungle and Drum & Bass. She’s played in various cities and festivals alongside names/collectives such as Discwoman, BaeTokyo, Mr Carmack, TOKiMONSTA, Madam X, and electronic music legends DJ Krush and RP Boo. Through travel and music she hopes that she can empower and lend support to other women of color like herself in the similar artistic fields.

Kartika Jahja (Jakarta, Indonesia) is a vocalist and songwriter with the group Tika & The Dissidents. The band is known to fuse different genres from punk, to trip hop, to jazz combined with Kartika’s defiant lyrics touching on issues from gender justice, sexuality, labour movement, to media literacy. As an activist Kartika has focused on the issue of gender and sexuality since 2012. In 2015 she founded The Bersama Project; a foundation that aims to promote gender equality through music and the arts. In July 2018, Kartika and her two partners opened an alternative art space called SELATAN.

Mich Dulce (Manila, Philippines)is a Filipina fashion designer, milliner and corsetiere by profession, specializing in the creation of ethical contemporary hats and headpieces with wholly sustainable traditional Philippine raw materials combined with traditional European millinery techniques. She is also the vocalist of The Male Gaze, a feminist riot grrrl band that aims to inform, provoke and challenge their audiences. Also a contemporary artist, Dulce’s practice as an artist has always been confessional and about her personal experiences as a woman and her reaction to the patriarchal social norms in the Philippines, reattributing and dissecting gender roles. Working with a variety of mediums (often involving stereotypically feminine craft), she builds immersive multi-sensory environments and installations that encourage the viewers to contribute to the work.

As you might already know since you've landed to this blog entry, or if you don't know already as this is your first time visiting this website, Music Pool Berlin is an organization that deals on a daily basis with the vast variety of topics concerning the professional lives of musicians - anything which is not the creative work per se: from insurance and taxes to working with labels and managing your own bookings to rights management. One way in which we do so, is via our monthly Community Evening events, in which we organize panels and talks on music and creativity related topics, inviting each time a different set of speakers, all professionally involved with different aspects of the music business.

Our June Community Evening was dedicated to a very delicate topic: mental health and creativity. Inspired by the reading of the Help Musicians UK survey, we decided to partner with dBs Music, a Berlin based music production and sound engeneering school who has in the latest months organized a series of events dedicated to the topic of mental health.

5 Things We Learnt at Our Music Pool Berlin Mental Health Panel

You sound unique. You're made from pure creative potential. You can stand alone or be part of a symphony. To the opportunistic music business, that makes you an instrument to be played; to over-pluck till destruct making sweet money music; to neglect to go out of tune. In its obdurate scheme, it is the necessary thumb to your melody – but that's just not true. Because you’rethe musician, and ultimately you are you.

It’s no secret: although it’s amazing to be professionally engaged with your passion, the very nature of the music industry brings with it a framework that makes us vulnerable as human beings. As Help Musicians UK’s recent study reported, musicians are three times more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety than the average (UK) population.

Factors at play include precariousness of living conditions, merging of personal identity with profession, working late and inconsistent hours, alcohol and drugs, heavy touring schedules and simply never switching off. But as we learnt at this year’s dBs Dialogues mental health series, coming together to talk about these issues – taking ownership of them, even – is the best way to bring about change.

Last month, we continued the conversation in a collaborative panel talk with Music Pool Berlin, an invaluable organisation which supports musicians with practical resources and advice. “When I read the study and heard that dBs Berlin was organizing an event series on the topic,” said our moderator, cultural producer and curator Andrea Goetzke, “I got the idea to also organise one of our Music Pool Berlin community evenings on the topic of mental health and music.”

Our fantastic panellists were: electronic artist Emika, artist manager and agency owner Andy Inglis, !K7 head of artist management and former label owner Rachael Patterson, and philosophical advisor and coach Florian Goldberg. Bringing together extensive knowledge from all corners of the music industry, they discussed the health issues that arise, how we can take better care of ourselves and others, and what we can do to turn detrimental working conditions and structural issues on their head.

You are not your music

You put your heart and soul into your music – we get it. But that does not mean you should be defined by it. As the Help Musicians UK report put it, the way that musicians come to embody their work, arguably “renders them particularly vulnerable.” It's the tipping point where a career becomes all-consuming, criticism turns personal, or a personal brand becomes a cage. But remember, you are a human first and a musician second.

As Emika pointed out, finding your brand is a great form of self-expression: “In the beginning, so much of it is about settling on an identity that you feel is yours.” But what happens when that identity becomes a feedback loop, or if you disassociate from it after it's brought you success? “That started to get really unstable for me,” she continued. “Getting internationally recognised for my music, I started to realise that I was surrounded by a lot of people I didn't understand.”

But in an industry where branding is everything, is there any way we combat this? According to Emika, it's all about keeping a distance: “Emika is like a glove,” she said. “I created certain guidelines that I could put on and take off.” One of the rules Emika is most strict about is not sharing anything personal online: “I don't focus on what I share with people around me; it's around my music.” And Andy agreed: “It's very healthy to be able to separate yourself from your public-facing career or identity, even if they are linked in every way.”

Be the cause, not the effect

Not feeling in control of your work or your life can be a great source of depression and anxiety for anyone. And in the music industry, facing pressure from managers and labels to relentlessly create, tour or live up to a certain sound, it's a feeling all too familiar. “If we are pushed to be just the effect [rather than the cause], and if we allow that, we start to feel bad,” Florian asserted. “To really understand what it means in your personal life – to ask where am I at the source of things? and where am I at the effect of things? – this is especially important for an artist.”

This is something that Emika has personally experienced. So anxious about an upcoming Glastonbury gig that she had to medicate in order to perform, Emika reflected, “I recognised that there was a lot of people around me that pushed me to do that and that I really needed to change my entire life.”

The best way to regain control over your life, Florian advised, is “for an individual is to ask, what can I do to change things where I am?” “For artists, it's good to make your own plan,” he continued, “then do it and follow it up and find the people who are willing to collaborate with you.” In the end, it's all about prioritising your own well-being. “If you keep your eyes on the prize, it really doesn't matter what comments people throw at you,” Emika added, “you have to just be focused on what you want and know why you're doing it.”

You must have lived on another planet for the last 5 years or so, if you haven’t noticed yet that the music business has a mental health problem.

With the loss of a number of high profile artists (Avicii, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington from Linking Park, Cranberries' frontwoman Dolores O'Riordan Lil Peep just to name a few), and many more becoming vocal about the problem (Lady Gaga, Benga, Olly Alexander from Years and Years, Rustie, Leftfield), the issue cannot be ignored anymore. Breaking the stigma and beginning the conversation its a first step, but the need for more urgent and practical solutions is real, as the numbers talk pretty clearly.

Triggered by a rise in the number of calls and applications for help from musicians experiencing mental health problems, British Charity Help Musician UK undertook in 2016 a research aimed at developing a more inclusive and holistic reflection of the state of musicians’ mental health, extending its focus beyond musicians to all those involved in the creative music process (who tends to be facing similar levels of pressure as shown by this insight published via Noisey).

Data resulting from this initial study were pretty impressive: out of the 2,211respondents to the survey, 71.1% admitted to having suffered from panic attacks and/ or high levels of anxiety, and 68.5% suggested they had suffered from depression.

This first part of the survey (available for reading here) was crucial for understanding the scale of the problem. Its follow up (downloadable for free here) was aimed instead at exploring the link between the compositional structure of the music industry and the mental health of those working within it.

Western Music tradition is embedded with a hard- to- die narrative that strongly ties together creativity and mental health, seen mainly as an individual issue. A little attention has been put instead on the overall mechanisms and working conditions that can affect and deteriorate one own psychological well- being.

In its second part of its report, Help Musicians UK has tried to highlight contextual dynamics and elements that can lead towards psychological pain and discomfort for musicians and music industry workers in general. A first issue to emerge has been precarity, to be intended both in its financial and experiential nature. Secondly, a number of cultural norms and working conditions, such as the role of feedback, the difficulty in defining „success‟, the impact careers can have on relationships, and issues surrounding equality and diversity understood as access to opportunity.

Help Musicians UK has since then activated a 24/7 mental health service, Music Minds Matter, to offer advice, signposting, emotional support, clinical pathways and professional therapeutic services, counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to musicians and people within the music industry suffering with mental health issues. As this looks as a step towards the right direction, it could not be enough.

As all the above mentioned studies focus more on the UK situation, during our panel in collaboration with DBS Music Berlin we want to look closely at the situation in Germany and try understand what strategies can be adopted and what changes need to be introduced to tackle the issue of mental health on a long term perspective.
