How have you stayed connected with other musicians, with your community or collective, and a wider scene during the past year of lockdown? What can we learn from this for the coming months and beyond?
In this Music Pool evening, we are curious to learn about experiences of different musicians networks and communities during the past year. What has caring for your collective, community and scene looked like? How have you continued collaborations? In a field like music that used to thrive a lot in physical spaces of concerts and club nights – how have you continued your practices, care and networking outside of those spaces?
This conversation is meant to give inspirations and share lessons learnt on networking, collaborations and community care for musicians for the coming months and beyond. It is also meant to give some pointers to musicians on where they can turn to if they are currently looking for connections and collaborations.

During the conversation, there will be also space for you all to spontaneously share your experiences, and ask questions.

No registration required. Just join us in the meeting room.

Participants:

Johanna Amelie / Visibility-Breakfast - The Visibility-Breakfast wishes to enable personal, professional and artistic exchanges within the Berlin artist community. The group wants to increase the visibility of FLINT* (female, lesbian, inter-sexual, non-binary, trans, queer) artists in the creative industry and stand up for gender justice. Johanna Amelie is a Berlin-based musician, producer and founder of the Visibility-Breakfast community.

Aiko Okamoto understands herself as a medium, connecting people between streets, club culture and visual art. In her weekly radio show "Notiz für die Welt danach" on Sphere Radio, she reads texts on anti-racism, housing and art. As an active member of the protest opera Lauratibor, she sings loudly at demonstrations against the sellout of the city. She also organizes events in IRL and digital spaces for the international network female:pressure.

Texas-born Sarj Lynch (they/them) is a Berlin-based community organiser and facilitator focused on mutual aid, compassionate communications and music. They are the co-founder and director of aequa, a community for social equity. Studies in journalism and internet law led to a career spanning technology, education, human resources, gastronomy, coaching and event management, with many odd jobs in-between. In music, they have played the roles of radio host, DJ, promoter, publicity director, critic and nerd. At aequa, their day to day is focused on running the aequa Community Centre in Berlin Wedding, and facilitating and co-organising community workshops, working groups and exchanges with a focus on mutual support, collective empowerment and collaborative action.

dumama is the South African singer and cultural nomad Gugulethu Duma, who grew up in a family of welders, singers, nurses and healers, between Pretoria and the Eastern and Western Cape. Her self-described “magical realism prayer music” pulls inspiration from Xhosa folk, jazz, hip-hop, and moments of protest in Africa and beyond. The multi-instrumentalist kechou (same) was born Kerim Melik Becker to German and Algerian parentage in a household governed by sonic progressivism (father) and feminist teachings (mother), and has spent the last half-decade producing Afro-fusion musical experiments in Germany, Uganda, Zimbabwe and South Africa. If anyone is well-equipped and -matched to tackle the global malaise of history and disease through storytelling in sound, it’s this pair. dumama + kechou recorded buffering juju long before the pandemic hit, at its core is a trial-and-error lesson for our present circumstance: when the world is recognizably fucked-up, what does it mean to build a new one? Together they co-founded a collective, called out of time embassy - curating a weekly jam session called Sonic Interventions in Berlin.

Sophie Ruston (Lecken)

Mirca Lotz (Network the Networks, Music Women* Germany)
Mirca is a curator, event organizer and activist in Munich and Berlin. With her creative agency [fwd: like waves] she produces and curates unique events with a focus on shows in public spaces, working intersectionality and crossing creative boundaries between music, movies, art, politics and more. She is an innovator in the international Keychange project, the co-founder of musicBYwomen* a Bavarian network based on learning, sharing, connecting and exchange for women* in the music industry and connected creative fields. She is member of the board of the Music Women* Germany network which just launched a nationwide database for women* in music and is invited regularly to speak about gender equality in the music industry at international festivals and conferences. Mirca also develops safer spaces policies for events and gives workshops and talks about it with her agency “Safe The Dance”. Currently, she is organizing a network meetup and exchange event called “Network the Networks” coming April 21st at ℅ pop convention.

it's crazy how time flies! On tuesday November 20th we had our last Artsit Meetup of the year, hosted at internet Explorer, on of our beloved venue in the heart of Neukolln. The weather was cold, but luckyly the musical entertainment provided by DJ Panni Simai (Raised on Robbery) and our talended guests did managed to warm everyone up.

Indra Bahia was the first one to go: she's looking for someone keen to help her with her new music video

Josh Savege has just completed a 2 months tour doing exclusively living room concerts thanks to Sofar Sounds, and he just released a documentary out of this experience. He's looking for a female vocalist he could collaborate with, an agent and somenone who could teach him how to improve his Ableton skills

Nemo Hill was definetly the yougest ouf our crew! Only 16 years old, he wanted to have a feedback to his son "Mr Popular"

Eclat Crew presented themselves: a new female* trans and non binary electronic music collective based in Kreuzberg: feel free to join them!

Tatiana Heuman showcased her latest music video "Quemò Tu Curuy", taken from her latest EP out a few months ago on Astro Nautico

Tara Nome Doyle Norwegian-Irish singer-songwriter, born and bred in Berlin-Kreuzberg, looking for someone to collaborate to her project, a folk-chamber pop with a pretty minimalistic imprint

Dance Depot are an instrumental band, and they are looking for singers who can add vocals to their tracks

Magnea gave us a little sneak peak of her tracks produced by Air Max' 97

Modern Pop String Trio: this super young guys from Ukraine did a very sweet last minute performance at the end of the Artist Meetup! They're based in Ukraine but looking to move to Berlin, and find new artists with whom they can collaborate.

Panellists included producer and composer Emika, artists manager Andy Inglis, Rachael Patterson, current head of Artist Management for K7!, and coach and philosophical advisor Florian Goldberg. As you might see from the below, that was probably the best summer location we had so far for a Community Evening!

Topic: The role of record labels today (and how to work with them as an artist)

Record labels have always been central players at the core of the music industry, helping musicians and producers in their artistic development, strengthening scenes around peculiar styles and genres and working as a point of convergence for like – minded artists, cultural operators and music fans.

But... what exactly does a record label do? At this Music Pool Berlin Community Evening, we want to explore how the role of record labels has changed during the latest years, understand at what stage of an artist career does a label get involved and provide some useful tips for artists on what’s the best way to approach record labels. In the context of the Torstraßen Festival x Independent Label Market, we gathered together a mixed group of London and Berlin based music industry professionals, all ranging from diverse experiences and backgrounds but with a common independent approach, to help us uncover the issues above.

Panellists:

Chrissie Niestroj/ Domino Recording Company / Domino Deutschland: Chrissie started out in the music industry in London after completing her BA with a dissertation about a new digital service provider: Spotify. Her first gig was with an online music PR company, where she developed an interest in social media management. When she moved on to Quest Management (Arcade Fire, Lykke Li, Marina & The Diamonds) Chrissie built relationships with the key digital players in the music market, seeking out new business models in the digital sphere. In 2014 she moved to Berlin and started working for indie label Domino, where she is a project manager and digital marketer. She also teaches a digital music module on the BA Music Business degree at BIMM Berlin.

Sofia Ilyas/ FLOAT PR: In 2015 Sofia Ilyas launched Float PR and from the offset gained high-profile clients such as Dishoom and Carhartt WIP. Sofia founded Float the record label in 2017 which focuses on music releases, events and clothing. For the labels launch event Sofia curated a evening centered around the piano combining jazz, dance and grime to an audience of over 600 at the Union Chapel. Sofia was previously at Erased Tapes for five years where she was an integral part of raising the profiles of artists such as Nils Frahm as well as the label. She has a monthly show on Soho Radio.

Monique Recknagel/ Sonic Pieces: Monique Recknagel is the owner of Sonic Pieces – a Berlin based boutique record label launched in 2009. Since then she has handpicked and -crafted over 30 releases from national and international artists working at the egde of contempory, classical and experimental music. Despite having an economic background, Monique always kept following her interest in music. After moving to Berlin in 2002 she started doing radio and later also arranged concerts. Starting the label wasn´t intentional, but perhaps an obvious step.

Rainer Scheerer/ SPRINGSTOFF: Rainer Scheerer is a Berliner Artist & Entrepreneur. His Music Label / Booking Agency SPRINGSTOFF is an Independent Music Company. Rainer is a member of the Sandbox Network. With his classical background he see music and performance art in a holistic way, not only to make money, but to create art and change how we see / feel / hear the world of music.

Drinks, music and networking can be enjoyed before and after the talk between the stalls of the market traders into the hallowed halls of the iconic Volksbühne Berlin.

The panel will precede Torstraßen Festival’s final (and biggest) concert, which takes place on the Volksbühne stage and will feature rising Australian superstar Alex Cameron, the toast of Canadian critics Lido Pimienta and Berlin’s favourite Italo Pop duo Itaca. After the release of "Hello World" at the latest, the first pop album written with the help of an AI, the music world would be in turmoil. Flow Machines and other "tools" promise nothing less than revolutionising music production by "managing" creative processes, "objectifying" styles, or acting as "artificial muse." With the next wave of technological innovation, traditional interfaces are likely to be eliminated, opening up completely new possibilities for music makers to compose, produce and perform music.

Machine listening: Applications of AI to Music

This talk examines present and future impacts of machine learning applied to music, with a focus on understanding and using machine learning in the music making process.

AI researchers are rapidly proposing new applications at every stage of the musical process. On the creative side, bots and intelligent assistants help musicians fluidly manage their own compositional tools and sound libraries. Also, novel musical instruments imbued with smart sensors and circuits greatly lower the barrier of entry to production and performance, expanding the ways we interface with our instruments. And enabling richer and more direct interaction between musicians and their fans as well. Experimental techniques for synthesizing audio and imitating styles on-demand are still in their infancy, but could one day revolutionize production and composition from the ground up. On the curatorial and business side, music recommender systems are beginning to scan the "long tail" of large music collections and automatically make accurate inferences about who is likely to listen to or buy those songs.

As algorithms invade every aspect of the music creation process, we are asked to reconsider what it means to be a musician in the 21st century.

The Music Pool Berlin Artists Meet Up offers a platform for musicians to share their music projects with a wider musician community, ask for feedback, ideas or support, and get to know each other. You can show a new video, play a new track or song, or perform live (only with a relatively easy tech setup, like singing, rapping with beats, acoustic instruments ..). You can also mention if you are e.g. looking for a drummer, a producer, a graphic designer etc.

Would you like to present at the Artist Meet Up? We have approx. 8 slots of 10 minutes each including feedback and discussion with the audience.

Please write an email to andrea (at) musicpoolberlin (dot) net latest by April 5, 2018, including a link to your music and some brief info on what and why you'd like to present. The event is open to all artists regardless of genre.

At the end of the presentations, there will be time to meet and talk to each other over a drink and some music. It definitely makes sense to come by also for those who are not presenting.

The moderation will be in English, however, you can present in German, if you feel more comfortable, and we will help you translate.

No entrance fee, just come by. No registration needed, only if you want to present.

Music Pool Berlin goes Reeperbahn Festival 2017 #Trainingday

Alljährlich kommt die internationale Musikkbranche beim Reeperbahn Festival zusammen, um sich über die aktuellen Herausforderungen des Musikgeschäfts auszutauschen. Beim Training Day am Festival-Samstag haben auch alle übrigen Besucher des Reeperbahn Festivals die Möglichkeit, intensiv Branchen-Luft zu schnuppern.
Mit ihrem gültigen Festivalticket können sie sich beim Training Day in rund 25 Workshops, Coachings und Vorträgen Einblicke ins aktuelle Musikgeschäft verschaffen bzw. diese vertiefen.
