This workshop focuses on the business side of the music industry regarding the challenges as well as the rewards of running an independent label. How to secure digital and physical distribution deals, securing synch license deals, the challenges of pressing vinyl records, and how branding through social media should be a top priority for independent labels—these are among the many things that our tutor DJ Amir has deal with as a label owner and as a signed artist, the proper knowledge of which, of course, can help many an artist and business owner in the music industry avoid unnecessary pitfalls. Additionally, his extensive experience as an A&R has positioned him to speak with authority and to educate others on the process of talent scouting and how to manage artists.

Former NYC session musician and MOBY touring bassist Greta Brinkman talks about changes in the industry, what's special about Berlin, and the importance of playing "analog" instruments in a digital age.
Berlin is well known as a EDM capital of the world, it has the largest number (10) of certified ABLETON trainers in Germany, and new technology appears every day. But todays talk is NOT about DAWs, instead we will examine the value of playing an analog instrument, and talk about what music means to you.

Are you making music because you hope to be "discovered" and get famous?
Are you making music because you want to earn a living doing it?
Do you plan to work for other people?
Do you play an analog instrument?
We will talk about these and other questions, and talk about ways to make music your job, without making you start to hate music.

Der Workshop vermittelt Basis-Hintergrundwissen über den Sinn und Zweck und die Funktionsweise der GEMA. Dazu gehören u.a. Informationen über den Verteilungsplan und Beispiele für Tarife und Ausschüttungsbeträge.

Ein kleiner Exkurs erläutert die Zuständigkeit der GVL in Abgrenzung zur GEMA.

Die Teilnehmer können individuell klären, welche Vor- oder Nachteile eine GEMA-Mitgliedschaft für sie persönlich bedeuten würde.

Das Aufnahmeverfahren und der Mitgliedsantrag für Urheber werden Schritt für Schritt erläutert. Es gibt Tipps für die Beschränkung der GEMA Mitgliedschaft auf bestimmte Rechtearten, sowie eine Erörterung von Alternativen zur GEMA.

Ein Überblick über die Online-Services der GEMA rundet den Nachmittag ab.

Berlin is full of International Creative people from all over the world.

Creative, productive and innovative people who bring with them: a lot of new ideas, potential and an international atmosphere.

But before those people can succesfully get started, They all have to deal with a hurdle of bureaucratic paperwork, public office visits (Äuslanderbehörde, Tax Office, Insurances..) and uncertanities about their rights and duties as well as with the lack of contacts, networks and places to go.

So this workshop will help all new-Berliners to get succesfully started: from registering with the Bürgeramt (Citizens office), getting a tax number, up to matters of social security, artist insurance (KSK) or for musicians a big question: the collecting agencies vs. creative commons for their musical rights, especially if you are not already a member in your own country, etc.

Egal ob für Newcomer oder etablierte Künstler - die Veröffentlichung in Eigenregie oder mit Hilfe ausgewählter Dienstleister ist ein unabhängiger und effizienter Weg zur Erreichung der eigenen Ziele. In diesem Seminar werden Schritte dazu aufgezeigt und die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten und Bereiche vorgestellt. Dies geschieht u.a. auch anhand konkreter Beispiele und der vorhandenen Künstlerprofile (der Teilnehmer).

Zielgruppe:
Sowohl Künstler am Anfang ihrer Karriere und vor der ersten Veröffentlichung, als auch etablierte Künstler, die nun nach neuen Wegen der Selbstvermarktung suchen.

++ The paperwork side of moving to Berlin as a musician - Getting set-up to live and work in Berlin ++

There is vast number of musicans and people working in music who come to Berlin from all over the world to work here for a certain time period - from spending the summer here to recording an album or settling down here for a few years to those who stay permanently.

While it may be easy in a city like Berlin to meet likeminded people and find a group or music scene to belong to - there are a lot of administrative things that are not as straightforward to understand, especially if you do not speak German fluently and perhaps not even aware that such administrative entries exist or are necessary for a life in Berlin.

What are the first steps that I have to do to get my Berlin life started? What is necessary to be able to work in Germany? What is the Ausländerbehörde ? What are my possibilities concerning getting health insurance? Is it easy to set up a bank account? How can I start a business? Get a tax number? Is there any support if I have a family and kids? As well as where to learn German? etc.

For this Music Pool Community evening #14 we have invited the knowledgeable AWO consultants: Heike Stapel, Katharina Jetzinger and Gundula Daerr of the AWO offices in Neukölln and Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg to discuss the bureaucratic side of things with you. Among many other social services, AWO provides practical advice to migrants moving to Berlin. The AWO consultants will be joined by fellow musicians and cultural workers living and working in Berlin to tell their personal stories. So far confirmed are - JJ Weihl of the band Fenster, the rapper, poet and DJ Black Cracker, our Music Pool colleague and promoter Melissa Perales, music promoter and booker Natasha Padabed, and Roy Danger, MD and keyborder of The SWAG, residents at Badehaus Szimpla with the regular Swag Jam.
