We had a really great time and a busy schedule at this year re:publica.

On the first day of conference, we runned our community night, exploring the topic of application of Artificial Intelligence to music composition through the talks of our colleague Eric Eitel and the one moderated by our own Andrea Goetzke in conversation with artist/ programmer Gene Kogan.

At the latest after the release of "Hello World", the first pop album written with the help of an AI, the music world is in turmoil. Flow Machines and other "tools" promise nothing less than revolutionizing music production by "managing" creative processes, "objectifying" styles, or acting as "artificial muse." With the next wave of technological innovation, conventional interfaces will be eliminated, making music creators opens up completely new possibilities to compose, produce and perform music.

Gene Kogan examines present and future impacts of machine learning applied to music, with a focus on a practical understanding and use of machine learning in the music making process. It will look into tools for composition, synthesizing audio and imitating styles, smart musical instruments, up to matching the listener with the perfectly fitting song. As algorithms invade every aspect of the music creation process, we are asked to reconsider what it means to be a musician in the 21st century.

Did you missed our talks at re:publica 2018? No Worries! You can watch the video below, featuring our own Andrea Goetzke (Music Pool Berlin / Torstrassen Festival) having a chat with the We Make Waves team and composer/ actvist Elie Gregory (Meetup Berlin) on marginalized communities in the music industry.

We Makes Waves joins forces with other music activists to discuss the pros and sometimes cons of the digital safer spaces and creating IRL events in which to promote and empower each other in the spaces in-between. With the hope of inclusion in IRL, is it possible that the spaces we create digitally become overly complicated because of individual wishes and frameworks that we make up in order to create and bring it out in the event?
