"Three Cities: International Commission" performing in Berlin

What happens when three musicians from different backgrounds get together and collaborate?

"Three Cities" is a new international commission that links Music Pool Berlin (Berlin) with Le Fil (Saint-Étienne) and Brighter Sound (Manchester). The project creates a unique opportunity for independent musicians to extend their network in the music industry and create new original music.

On the first edition of "Three Cities", musicians Martha Rose (Berlin), Pailette (St. Etienne) and Shunya (Manchester) have come up with new jointly created compositions via a three steps process: jamming together in Manchester, recording in St. Etienne, and performing in Berlin.

On March 15th 2018, the trio had the chance to present the product of their joint effort, together with a glimpse of their own solo work, at the Music Pool Berlin "Community Evening" held at Hangar 49 in Berlin.

Prior to the performance, the three protagonists of "Three Cities" had the chance to discuss with other fellow musicians their experiences with international collaborations, and share their impressions on collaborative projects, exchanges or residency programmes in different contexts. During the panel, Martha Rose, Pailette and Shunya were joined by electronic musicians, DJs and cultural activists Gebrüder Teichmann (aka Andi und Hannes Teichmann), Berlin based indie multi-instrumentalist Johanna Amelie, and Allie ( aka Florian Boss).

Over the course of two months, 3 Artists from Manchester, Saint Etienne, and Berlin created music together. At the end of the project the three Artist presented the work they did together as well as showed off their own skills.

LIVE CONCERT

This evening features the public performance of the Three Cities sound collaboration project, which has brought together three musicians from Manchester, St. Etienne, and Berlin in February/March 2018. In three steps, working on new music together in Manchester, recording in St. Etienne, and performing in Berlin, the musicians Martha Rose (Berlin), Pailette (St. Etienne) and Shunya (Manchester) have come up with new jointly created music and we look forward to what it sounds like. Each of the musicians will also perform some of their own songs.

TALK

The talk brings together musicians for an exchange of experiences with international collaborations: collaborative projects, exchanges or residency programmes in different contexts. For one, we want to explore the different possibilities of applying for / engaging in such a collaboration. And also discuss what has worked and what didn't, and what kind of recommendations could be given to the institutions organizing those programmes, be they Goethe Institute, the European Union, or communal funds like Musicboard Berlin.

Andi und Hannes Teichmann, aka Gebrüder Teichmann

Johanna Amelie is a Berlin based indie artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist who plays folky indie music on international stages and festivals, sharing stages with local and international artists.

Martha Rose is an English songwriter and multi instrumentalist based in Berlin.

Allie, Florian Boss, is a Berlin based solo musician.

Three Cities: International Commission together with Brighter Sound and Le Fil

Music Pool Berlin is delighted to announce Three Cities, a new international commission in partnership with Le Fil (Saint-Étienne) and Brighter Sound (Manchester).

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with musicians representing two other international cities and creative organizations – Le FIL in Saint-Étienne, and Brighter Sound in Manchester. Together you will spend two days at Brighter Sound in February creating new music, two days recording at Le FIL, and three days at music industry events and performing at Music Pool Berlin in March.
