An International Look at Music Scenes in the Current Moment

Each year, the Pop-Kultur festival invites in collaboration with the Goethe-Institute an international group of musicians to come to Berlin for an exchange programme, and to also get to know the local music scenes. This year, the group is convening online, meeting over a longer period of time, with the plan of meeting in Berlin, foreseeably in the summer of 2021.

One objective of this get-together is to introduce the international group of musicians to Berlin's different music communities for potential collaborations over the next several months.

During the panel conversation, participants will explore and discuss how independent music scenes in different countries around the world are faring during the pandemic – where live music has largely come to a pause. If touring is on hold indefinitely, and performing is oftentimes the largest source of income for professional musicians, how is this situation playing out now and into the future? What structural issues are becoming apparent? How do musicians, collectives and communities view and address them? How is this changing how musicians work, how collaborations are organised, and how music is distributed and enjoyed? Which changes should be permanent and which ones should only be temporary? What can we learn from each other, and how can we support one another – internationally, too?

A panel of three group participants will start the conversation – then everyone else can join in with their own perspectives:

Janat Sohail Aziz / Wooly and the Uke - Wooly and the Uke is an indie-folk project laced around the phantasmagoria that pours out of the singer and the songwriter, Janat Sohail Aziz. Her music is crafted upon satire and often, the disconnection with what lies within. Based on an ominous sound of the ukulele, the structures push and spill out of the preconceived boundaries. Having remained a former member of Pakistan’s first all-female ensemble in Nescafe Basement, Janat Sohail Aziz introduced Wooly and the Uke in 2016. Her debut single called ‘Circus’ stirred a melancholy with its hollow atmosphere and soaring orchestration, pushing one into an enchanting fantasy. In 2020, she released a new single in collaboration with Poor Rich Boy, an indie-folk band based in Pakistan, called Watch – similar to Circus, it frames the struggles of humans and their weakening attempt at humanity. Currently based in Tallinn, Estonia, Wooly and the Uke aims to release an EP in 2020.

Juan Manuel Cortéz / Lunate - Lunate is a small, moon-shaped bone in the human hand, and a music project by Juan Manuel Cortés. Seeking to create musical compositions that carry the moody oscillations of Bogota, the Colombian artist explores sound inspired by the scenery, cycles and dynamics of the city. Since 2016 he released a tape on 100% Silk and various tracks on different electronic music labels. In addition, 2018 saw the birth of Malviaje, an attempt to revisit Corteś Colombian musical ancestry. The research delved into Currulao, a traditional rhythm made in the Pacific region of the country with a time signature of 6/8. The result (to be released soon) is an exploration of rhythmic patterns that will make people move, but remain different to the traditional 4×4 approach: dance floor friendly music, that doesn’t exactly fit with contemporary dance music or with the traditional Colombian output.

Santiago Narváez / Glitchbird - Born in México City in 1990. Self-taught musician and coder. Started making music at age 13. In 2015 released EP ‘Inner’ as Moonatic composing and recording guitar, backing and main vocals, bass and synth. In 2017 scored music for ‘WireLines’. In 2018 In 2018 released LP ‘Another Sky’ as Moonatic. In 2020 released EP ‘Jhula’ as Glitch Bird. As part of Moonatic has opened shows for The Album Leaf, Balmorhea and Low Roar. Glitch Bird blends evolving atmospheres, sticky basslines, hallucinating sequences, and simple yet captivating beats. His live presentations are closer to ambient and techno. The live set makes use of bass and beat sequences, as well as live improvisations and recordings of electronic and midi instruments. The use of long decaying delays and improvisation results in organic and unique live sets.

LIVE CONCERT

This evening features the public performance of the Three Cities sound collaboration project, which has brought together three musicians from Manchester, St. Etienne, and Berlin in February/March 2018. In three steps, working on new music together in Manchester, recording in St. Etienne, and performing in Berlin, the musicians Martha Rose (Berlin), Pailette (St. Etienne) and Shunya (Manchester) have come up with new jointly created music and we look forward to what it sounds like. Each of the musicians will also perform some of their own songs.

TALK

The talk brings together musicians for an exchange of experiences with international collaborations: collaborative projects, exchanges or residency programmes in different contexts. For one, we want to explore the different possibilities of applying for / engaging in such a collaboration. And also discuss what has worked and what didn't, and what kind of recommendations could be given to the institutions organizing those programmes, be they Goethe Institute, the European Union, or communal funds like Musicboard Berlin.

Andi und Hannes Teichmann, aka Gebrüder Teichmann, are electronic musicians, DJs and cultural activists, rooted in Berlin‘s techno underground and DIY-culture since the late nineties. Andi and Hannes have put together several projects in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute, like TEN CITIES, BLNRB & SOUNDCAMP in Sri Lanka, Pakistan & Mexico, and established the intercultural electro ensembles KARACHI FILES (Pakistan/Europe), BLNRB (Nairobi/Berlin) & MONDMASCHINE (Mexico/Central America/Europe). With their label NOLAND they are compressing this diversity. Their musical activities from DJing, giving workshops and playing live sets have taken them to over 60 countries as far as Afghanistan, Honduras, Sibiria or Angola.

Johanna Amelie is a Berlin based indie artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist who plays folky indie music on international stages and festivals, sharing stages with local and international artists. Her music is inviting the listeners to immerse in a very personal world of tones, stories and soundscapes. She has recently participated in the Buzz meets Biz programme with musicians in Ghana, Spain and the UK.

Martha Rose is an English songwriter and multi instrumentalist based in Berlin. Her music is a sensitive form of casio pop, incorporating traditional folk song influences. She is participant in the Three Cities sound collaboration project.
Pailette, from St. Etienne/France illuminates the meanders of her life with an intimate and delicate music. As a solo artist, the Three Cities collaboration project is a new experience for her.

Allie, Florian Boss, is a Berlin based solo musician. He has played around 300 shows since 2010 in Europe, North America and Brazil, and has published 4 albums (on Clouds Hill/Rough Trade and Motor Music). During his residency in Salvador/Brazil in 2017, he got the opportunity to shoot a number of music videos for his new songs, together with local collaborators.

What are the possibilities and challenges for music from African countries in Germany in particular, but also in Europe overall? Music moves freely through digital networks; a track on Soundcloud uploaded in Lagos or Accra can inspire another musician in Paris and be played in a radio show in Berlin. Afrobeat parties are on the rise around Europe, and musicians take inspirations from a global repertoire so that styles inspire each other globally.

But what does the organizational and business side of music from Africa in Europe look like? When you want to release music in Germany, on an African or a German label? When you want to tour with your band in Europe? When you want to distribute and license your music in Europe? And, when you want to find collaborators over here, or just get attention by press or DJs?

Apart from organizing a panel with people who work with African music and artists in Germany and Europe, from a label, booking, media, promoter and DJ perspective – This Music Pool evening also wants to give all of you interested in cooperation with the Ghanaian music scenes the chance to meet a group of Ghanaian musicians, plus musicians from Germany/Spain/UK, that we are part in hosting in Berlin in mid October.

Pamela Owusu-Brenjah works as A&R consultant with the Africa & Central Europe project of Universal Music, that identifies and signs artists from African countries. She DJs as DJ Pam Bam and organizes the African Food Festival in Berlin.

Georg Milz is a musicjournalist, producer, blogger and DJ, and engaged in urban african music since 15 years. He cofounded the label Outhere Records that released 30 albums of african pop music of which 10 are compilations that give an inside into african club culture. Since a couple of years he runs the website Urban Africa Club where he introduces the newest artist and releases out of the buzzing world of urban africa. Last year he curated the Urban Africa Festival #myfuture 2020 for the Clubbahnhof Ehrenfeld in Cologne.

Christoph Linder runs the friendly booking agency Planetrock, and has organized many European tours for various African bands, like Konono No 1, Hailu Mergia, Nahawa Doumbia, or Orchestre Le Mangelepa.

Max Weissenfeldt is a drummer, producer, label- and publishing company owner. In 2010 he traveled Ghana for the first time and releases since 2014 frequently Ghanaian artists on his label Philophon. Most prominent is the Ghana Music Award winning Frafra artist Guy One.

Aziz is the organiser of some of Germany's biggest and longest running Afrobeats Parties. Under his stage name Mista Wallizz he is also known as an Afrobeats & Afro House DJ having played at various clubs and festivals throughout Germany.

Die tollen Songs sind da, die Band ist perfekt eingespielt, die ersten Konzerte in der Heimstadt sind gespielt und waren gar nicht mal so unerfolgreich. Nun wollt Ihr den nächsten Schritt gehen und Euch auch überregional und vielleicht sogar im Ausland einen Namen machen. Das heißt, Konzerte müssen her und eine gut organisierte Tournee muss geplant werden.

Doch wie geht das eigentlich genau? Wie komme ich an Auftrittsmöglichkeiten anderen Städten? Woher weiß ich, welchem örtlichen Veranstalter meine Band gefallen könnte und wo finde ich dessen Kontakt? Reichen dem Veranstalter ein paar gut produzierte Demosongs und eine schicke Website oder was braucht der eigentlich von mir? Und wenn die Konzerte erst mal gebucht sind, was gibt es während der Tour alles zu beachten? Welche Aufgaben fallen an und welche Manpower wird entsprechend auf Künstler- und Veranstalterseite benötigt? Wie bewirbt man so eine Tournee am besten und am wichtigsten, wer verdient bei Konzerten eigentlich welches Geld?

Diesen und weiteren Fragen zum Konzertbooking und zum Tourneegeschäft werden wir in diesem Workshop auf den Grund gehen. Damit Ihr Eure nächste Konzertreise optimal planen und vorbereiten könnt, es während der Tour keine bösen Überraschungen gibt und Ihr Euch entspannt und ausgeruht auf das konzentrieren könnt, worum es wirklich geht: Geile Shows abzuliefern und die Fans von Euch und Eurer Musik überzeugen.

The workshop aims to give a broad introduction to booking tours in Europe and specifically in the German-speaking countries, with a step-by-step guide on:

how and when to prepare a tour, doing it yourself vs. working with an agency
where to go and specifics of different kind of venues and promoters
how to address promoters and venues
organize transportation, bureaucracy and logistics
tour promotion and media relations

The workshop is aimed at both artists that have just started out or want to tour in Europe for the first time as well as artists who have already toured a bit, giving (hopefully) valuable new tips, tricks & insights, with a focus on small & mid-sized venues as well as DIY structures and networks.

Ein Interview mit Julakim über ihre Tour durch Südamerika

Bei unserem Community Evening # 4 im ://about:blank war das Thema das Abends "heavy touring". Heute featuren wir eine Künstlerin, die dazu einiges zu erzählen hat.

Julakim ursprünglich aus Darmstadt, war in diesem Jahr auf DIY Tour durch Südamerika. Im Interview erzählt sie uns, wie man es mit wenig Geld schafft eine komplette Tour zu spielen und außerdem auch noch neue Großeltern findet.

//Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen?

Ich bin julakim und erst seit November 2013 bin ich in die Rolle der Liedermacherin geschlüpft. Aber wie auch als Architektin versuche ich, Menschen anzustoßen authentischer zu werden, sich selbst zu entdecken, sich dem Unbekannten zu öffnen. Ich freue mich sehr, wenn der Funken überspringt. Einer meiner oft zitierten Sätze "Don't space your moves, but move your space" zeigt diese Haltung der Architektin ganz deutlich - sie kam aber erst beim singen heraus!

//Was führt Dich nach Berlin?

Berlin ist für mich ein Ort mit vielen, konfusen running processes. Ich liebe es darin zu baden und diese Prozesse künstlerisch zu verdauen.

//Wie hast Du deinen Aufenthalt in Südamerika organisiert und finanziert?

Ich habe meine Wohnung untervermietet und hatte auch nur dieses Geld. Es ist aufgegangen, obwohl ich mich die ganze Tournee über nicht eingeschränkt habe. Die einzige Vorbereitung waren meine Aufkleber "itufi"; den Rest habe ich vor Ort improvisiert. Ich lernte jeden Tag zig Sachen, denn das Musikbusiness war mir komplett fremd. Zusätzlich erhielt ich viel Unterstützung von meinen Freund*Innen. Mit den Konzerten gewann ich Fans und Freunde, die mir zu weiteren Gigs, Zeitungsartikeln und Radiointerview verhalfen - nur so bin ich zum Beispiel bis nach Argentinien geflogen. Dank unserer vernetzten Welt und meiner Hingabe, die Crowd als Freund, als Partner zu verstehen, bin ich von der Berliner Medienkünstlerin Sandra Becker ins Goethe Institut Porto Alegre eingeladen worden, um ihr Gedicht HALLO WELT - OLA MUNDO zu vertonen.

Ich glaube, es geht darum, zu verstehen, dass die Menschen da sind, um zu erleben. Ein authentisches Gefühl möchte man gerne weitertragen. Davon habe ich wohl am meisten profitiert. Die Zuschauer meinten immer, dass ich so echt sei, so natürlich sei. Und wollten dann irgendwie mitmachen, Teil sein. Das war für mich das größte Lob!

//Von welchen besonderen Erfahrungen und lustigen Anekdoten kannst Du uns erzählen?

Wirklich besonders für mich ist, dass ich nun brasilianische Großeltern habe. Sie sind 94 und 84 Jahre alt und waren auf einmal da! Sie haben Lebenserfahrung und eine unheimliche Weitsicht. Es hat mir gezeigt, wie wichtig es ist authentisch zu sein ist und wie meine Musik Grenzen überschreitet. Es kommt so viel zurück, dass ich nur dankbar sein kann und ich hoffe, etwas davon mit meiner Musik zurückzugeben.

//Welche Unterschiede oder Gemeinsamkeiten gibt es bei der Planung und Umsetzung zum Touren in Deutschland?

Da mein Künstlerleben mit Brasilien begann, kann ich das nicht so genau sagen. Ich versuche gerade meine südamerikanische Erfahrung hier auch umzusetzen. Muss allerdings sagen, dass ich hier zurückhaltender bin, sprich nicht persönlich vorbeischaue sondern eben erst eine offizielle eMail mit angemessenem Pressetext schicke. Aber auch in Deutschland versuche ich das improvisierte immer wieder aufzunehmen. So habe ich vom 23. bis 29.06.14 eine TrampTour zu den "Deutschen Aktionstagen zur Nachhaltigkeit" gemacht und bin auch wieder auf einigen OpenAir-Bühnen gelandet. Es klappt also auch hier, wenn man sich traut.

//Hast Du Tipps für anderen Künstler, die auch gerne im Ausland Touren wollen?

Singt in Eurer Muttersprache! Das haben mich die Fans in Südamerika gelehrt! Sie waren fasziniert von zartem, schwebenden Deutsch. Gebt eurem Publikum einen Einstieg in Eure Lieder, indem ihr den Rahmen in der Landessprache umreißt.

Des Weiteren habt Vertrauen, wenn Unbekannte Euch etwas anbieten. Es hat bei mir zwar nicht immer alles geklappt, aber die Aktionen, die realisiert wurden, waren ja geradezu magisch!

//Was sind Deine nächsten Schritte? Planst Du eine weitere Tour im Ausland oder wird jetzt erst einmal Deutschland unsicher gemacht?

Jetzt bin ich ja gerade zurück aus Frankreich und Spanien und schon wieder unterwegs in Italien. KickOff macht meine jährlich stattfinden Sommerakademie PoolPlay in Südtirol. Danach werde ich bis nach Turin weitertouren und schließlich auf dem Rückweg in Innsbruck noch spielen.

Sprich ich habe schon eine Mini-Europa-Tournee an die Südamerika-Tournee drangehängt ... //ironie off. Auf der Burg Waldeck habe ich beim 15. Peter Rohland Singewettstreitt im Einzelgesang den 3. Platz gemacht. Und so hoffe ich, dass nach und nach sich meine Lieder verbreiten und ich noch mehr Auftritte geben kann.

//Wo kann man Dich demnächst sehen? Gibt es neue Musik?

Meine CD "itufi - to the tropics and back" ist eine abstrakte Ableitung meiner improvisierten Tournee, sprich ich bin gerade auf CD-Release-Tournee! :) Des weiteren arbeite ich an einem weiteren Album mit vorwiegend deutschen Liedern. Das wird aber nichts vor Winter 2015 schätze ich.
