Call for Artists: Sound Lab for Fluid Ways of Knowing

The Sound Lab for Fluid Ways of Knowing brings together eight artists working with sound and language, living in Ghana and Germany, to engage in a collective process of artistic research on artistic methodologies of fluidity, orality, non-duality, of process and improvisation.

We have a free spot in the group, and with this call would like to invite artists with a particular interest in an open process of artistic research, in considering “fluid ways of knowing”, and in working collectively.

Project Schedule

an online preparatory phase Nov 22 - Jan 23 (with 3-4 online meetings)
a week of in-person Sound Lab with internal and public moments of performance, conversation and workshop at the Brechtfestival in Augsburg, 11 - 18 February 2023
a week of in-person Sound Lab in Accra, also with internal and public parts, in late April/early May 2023, exact date tbd

With “ways of knowing” we refer to

different epistemologies, oral ways of passing on history, ways of being intellectual beyond academia, knowledge gained in lived experience, embodied knowledge, to the many ways of making sense. We speak to knowledge produced in the working class, in a process of transitioning gender, in a “queer art of failure”, in the many different regions in the global South, in lived experiences of migration.
what can be known through the artistic practices working with sound and language of the participating artists. For example in practices of moving beyond rigid grammars towards methodologies of queering and bending, of being in the moment and reacting to the process. Sound is also an artistic medium that is accessible for many and that has the potential to communicate and connect across differences.
and there is the question of how art contributes to becoming aware of one’s situatedness and agency in society, within capitalism and related structures of power (which relates to the theme of next year’s Brechtfestival).

Participating in the project will include - engaging in an open process of artistic research, considering and working on the topics through your and everyone else’s practices, preparing one public workshop or related activity, collectively working on a performance that will happen on the last day of the lab respectively in Augsburg and Accra. Small additional performances and public interventions are possible. An artist fee and all travel expenses will be paid.

Trial & Error Space on web3 and culture @ re:publica

In collaboration with the re:publica festival for the digital society, Music Pool Berlin organizes the Trial & Error space on 8 June 2022:

Various approaches have already aimed to make the internet more decentralised again. What is now becoming clear in the context of the sometimes heated discussion about the decentralised web3, NFTs, DAOs etc. is that many creators, meaning producers, creative workers, artists, musicians etc., share this goal and are experimenting in web3. From their point of view, decentralisation means that they no longer want closed silos that are run with their data (or their productions) - without any say in the matter. Furthermore, they demand fair compensation for their work beyond the zero-point amounts per click or play from platforms such as Youtube, Spotify etc.. For the creators, the web3 has supposedly attractive monetisation ideas in store: from artist tokens to NFT art to blockchain-based music streaming. Speaking of fairness and participation: How would it be if the web3 were to provide a technological solution for cooperative business and the democratic participation processes necessary for this? Decentralised autonomous organisations (or DAOs for short), according to their proponents, have the potential to automate these administrative and nerve-racking grassroots democratic processes, which are extremely complex in the analogue world. All these promises are legitimate and desirable from the curators' point of view.

The technological driver for the latest attempt to create a decentralised "web3" are the much-vaunted blockchains. And that's where the problems start, as most blockchains still have a miserable eco-balance. The new, less computationally intensive proof-of-stake (PoS) method is supposed to improve this significantly. However, Etherium, currently the most important blockchain for mining NFTs, still uses the more computationally intensive proof-of-work (PoW) authentication. Another critical strand of discourse, with an anti-capitalist slant, works away at the supposed main goal of web3, the total commercialization of everything digital (quasi diametrically opposed to the older peer-to-peer approach of sharing). The pixel art of the NFT movement, which has now also reached the high-priced, traditional art market, serves as a projection surface.

The curators believe that despite justified criticism, the web3 deserves a space in which it can continue to be imagined, analysed and experimented with - trial and error, in a respectful framework, without bashing and shaming.

Musikproduktionen für Theaterinszenierungen und Performances sind sowohl ein künstlerisches Entwicklungsfeld als auch eine wirtschaftliche Einkommensquelle für MusikerInnen. Mit Musikschaffenden und Performern sprechen wir über ihre Erfahrungen in der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Musik und darstellenden Künsten. Welche beruflichen Möglichkeiten gibt es? Gerade auch für MusikerInnen die sonst eher Pop-Musik im weitesten Sinne machen? Wie gestaltet sich die Zusammenarbeit? Werden Stücke gemeinsam entwickelt oder wird Musik erst im zweiten Schritt für bestehende Konzepte angefragt - und was sind Erfahrungen im Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Anforderungen? Worauf ist speziell bei der Arbeit mit Performance und Theater zu achten? Was sind die Erwartungen seitens der darstellenden Künste? Gibt es bestimmte rechtliche, organisatorische, technische und wirtschaftliche Fragen zu berücksichtigen? Welche Ideen und Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten gibt es für zukünftige Kooperationen zwischen MusikerInnen und darstellenden KünstlerInnen?

Mit dabei sind:
* Barbara Morgenstern, Musikerin, Komponistin und Leiterin des Chors des HKW, hat für verschiedene Produktionen mit Rimini Protokoll zusammengearbeitet.
* Albrecht Ziepert, Musiker (u.a. Pentatones) und Komponist für Orchester, Theater, zeitgenössischen Tanz und audiovisuelle Installationen. Er ist Teil des Berliner Performancekollektivs MS Schrittmacher.
* Nikola Duric und Dariusz Kostyra, 2/5 des Performancekollektivs Showcase Beat Le Mot, für die Musik ein wichtiger Teil ihrer Produktionen ist; arbeiten zur Zeit an einer Produktion mit Thies Mynther.
* Thies Mynther, Musiker (u.a. Phantom Ghost, Stella, Superpunk) und Produzent (u.a. Chicks on Speed, Dillon), arbeitet mit verschiedenen Regisseuren als Komponist, Musiker und musikalischer Leiter und ist aktuell an einer Produktion mit Showcase Beat Le Mot beteiligt.

Warum werden manche Bands im Radio gespielt und andere nicht? Nach welchen Kriterien wählen MusikredakteurInnen von online und Print Medien aus über welche MusikerInnen sie schreiben? Wann ist ein guter Zeitpunkt um sich an traditionelle Medien zu wenden - bei einer Tour, einer neuen EP oder muss es das klassische Album sein um Aufmerksamkeit zu bekommen? Welches Material brauchen MusikjournalistInnen um im redaktionellen Alltag damit arbeiten zu können? On Tuesday, 25 November, Brian Turner, music director of the freeform radio station WFMU, will share his experiences with radio programming in a public interview. Entry is free, and it takes place at ACUD, doors open 7:30, public talk starts at 8 pm.

Zum nächsten Music Pool Community Abend am 22. Oktober im Westgermany haben wir einige Vertreter von Labels eingeladen.

Was genau bringt mir als MusikerIn eigentlich ein Label? Ist sowas überhaupt noch zeitgemäß? Welche Aufgaben und Funktionen übernimmt das Label? Was kann ich erwarten? Bringt mir das Geld, Aufmerksamkeit, Kontakte, .. und übernimmt ein Label irgendwelche Kosten für mich? Wie sollte ich an die Label-Suche rangehen? Wie finde ich das richtige Label für mich? Zu welchem Zeitpunkt sollte ich mir über das Thema Label Gedanken machen? Oder soll/kann ich meine Musik doch selbst veröffentlichen?

Es haben für den Abend zugesagt:

Jörg Heidemann vom VUT (Verband unabhängiger Musikunternehmen) vertritt die Interessen vieler Indie Labels in Deutschland. Mit einer Überblicks-Perspektive wird er zu der Label-Landschaft in Deutschland Auskunft geben, sowie darüber sprechen für welche KünstlerInnen und unter welchen Bedingungen die Zusammenarbeit mit einem Label sinnvoll ist.

Thorsten Lütz ist Gründer und Betreiber des Labels Karaoke Kalk.

Daniel Meteo, Manager von Apparat, bestreitet mit anderen den Verlag Random Noize Musick wie auch das Label Shitkatapult.

Music Pool Berlin Community Abend #6 - Composing for Film - on the example of Only Lovers Left Alive

We are really excited to have composer Jozef van Wissem over for a talk on composing for film - at our next community evening on Monday 13th October. Jozef will talk about his recent work on the soundtrack for the Jim Jarmusch movie Only Lovers Left Alive , and will provide insights into his approaches on composing for film.

Jozef is currently composing several soundtracks for cinema. In 2013 he won the Cannes Soundtrack award for Only Lovers Left Alive. He collaborates with Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton and Zola Jesus.

Jozef van Wissem is in town for a concert on Tuesday 14 October at Grüner Salon.

The venue for the Music Pool Community Evening with Jozef van Wissem is Ackerstadtpalast, the theatre in the backyard of Schokoladen.

Community Evening #5 - Summer BBQ

On Tuesday 29th July we invite you and your friends to the Music Pool Berlin Summer BBQ, in the backyard of the Music Pool Berlin office (Warschauer Str. 70A). Entry is free, of course, and drinks and food (from vegan to meat) will be available at very low cost. The beer is sponsored by Quartiermeister. We start at 7 pm. This time, there is no public presentation of discussion, but it's just about meeting each other and enjoy a summer evening together.
