About the workshop

It hits you in a moment where you least expect it: the creative blockade. The phenomenon widely known among creatives all kind, can not only be frustrating but also potentially dangerous for a career, especially if creative work ist tied to a deadline. But what is actually behind the phenomenon? What is its background? And is it possible to control our creativity?

The event adresses all creatives who already have experience with blockades or want to prevent them. We are going to explore the psychological background of blockades, take a look at the challenges of creative work in everyday life, and expose negative behavioral patterns and affirmations in the context of blockades. The event does not just dispel common prejudices about creativity, but all participants get equipped with useful tools to master their everyday life as creatives in a long-term blockade-free manner.

What are the possibilities and challenges for music from African countries in Germany in particular, but also in Europe overall? Music moves freely through digital networks; a track on Soundcloud uploaded in Lagos or Accra can inspire another musician in Paris and be played in a radio show in Berlin. Afrobeat parties are on the rise around Europe, and musicians take inspirations from a global repertoire so that styles inspire each other globally.

But what does the organizational and business side of music from Africa in Europe look like? When you want to release music in Germany, on an African or a German label? When you want to tour with your band in Europe? When you want to distribute and license your music in Europe? And, when you want to find collaborators over here, or just get attention by press or DJs?

Apart from organizing a panel with people who work with African music and artists in Germany and Europe, from a label, booking, media, promoter and DJ perspective – This Music Pool evening also wants to give all of you interested in cooperation with the Ghanaian music scenes the chance to meet a group of Ghanaian musicians, plus musicians from Germany/Spain/UK, that we are part in hosting in Berlin in mid October.

How do you define success and how can you work sustainably as a musician?

Professional side and session musicians David Anania (Blue Man Group Berlin) and Greta Brinkman (Moby, L7, Debbie Harry) discuss their careers as side players, changes in the industry, and tips for staying relevant and finding your own definition of “success”.

Former NYC session musician and MOBY touring bassist Greta Brinkman talks about changes in the industry, what's special about Berlin, and the importance of playing "analog" instruments in a digital age.
Berlin is well known as a EDM capital of the world, it has the largest number (10) of certified ABLETON trainers in Germany, and new technology appears every day. But todays talk is NOT about DAWs, instead we will examine the value of playing an analog instrument, and talk about what music means to you.

Are you making music because you hope to be "discovered" and get famous?
Are you making music because you want to earn a living doing it?
Do you plan to work for other people?
Do you play an analog instrument?
We will talk about these and other questions, and talk about ways to make music your job, without making you start to hate music.
