Welche Erfahrungen haben Künstler*innen, Labels und PR Leute im letzten Jahr mit ihren Album Releases gemacht, und was können wir daraus für die in diesem Jahr geplanten Releases lernen, wo ja Touren auch nicht sicher planbar sein werden?

Zum Album Release wurde traditionell eine Tour gebucht, um das Album zu promoten. Album und Tour gingen Hand in Hand. Die Tour machte auf das Album aufmerksam und durch das neue Album entstand Interesse die Musik auch live zu hören.

Wie funktionieren Album Releases derzeit, wo touren nicht möglich ist? Wie erreichen Musiker*innen, Labels und PR Leute weiterhin Aufmerksamkeit für ein Album, die über den Release Tag hinausgeht? Was sind spezielle Problemlagen und wie geht ihr damit um? Was können Künstler*innen davon lernen, die gerade ein Release planen? Neben dieser speziellen Situation möchten wir über die organisatorische Planung eines Album Release, sowie Möglichkeiten und Ideen zur Promotion auch im allgemeinen sprechen. Also – ein Abend für alle, die dieses Jahr ein Album (oder auch EP, Mixtape ..) Release planen.

Alle teilnehmenden Sprecher*innen haben im letzten Jahr ein Album herausgebracht und/oder Album Releases von Label- und Promoseite her betreut:

Florian Zimmer ist Musiker - mit Driftmachine, Ellicist, Saroos, Tvii SON. Mit Bands wie Odd Nosdam, The Notwist und Lali Puna ist er international getoured. Er macht zudem die Pressearbeit für die Labels Morr Music, Alien Transistor und Faitiche.

Albertine Sarges - Nach zahlreichen Kollaborationsprojekten, unter anderem mit Itaca, Holly Herndon und Kat Frankie, stellt die in Berlin geborene und aufgewachsene Künstlerin Albertine Sarges für ihre Debüt-LP "The Sticky Fingers" eine neue Band zusammen und unterschreibt beim britischen Indie-Label Moshi Moshi Records. Ihr Debütalbum, im Januar 2021 erschienen, nähert sich ihrer Sicht auf feministische Theorie, Überlegungen zu Bisexualität, Geschlechterstereotypen und psychischer Gesundheit.

Vivien Mierzkalla - Nach Praktika beim Berliner Label Snowhite sowie dem deutschen Büro von Domino Recordings wechselte Vivien Mierzkalla 2011 als Head of Online PR zur PR Agentur Verstärker Medienmarketing. Dort hat sie deutsche Online-PR-Kampagnen für Künstler wie Courtney Barnett, Kamasi Washington, Petula Clark, alt-J, Bon Iver und Mac DeMarco aufgesetzt. Zusätzlich hat sie mit drei Freunden ihr eigenes Label Humming Records betrieben, mit Acts wie DZ Deathrays, K.Flay oder Sea Moya, bis sie im September 2017 zur Secretly Group als Labelmanagerin für Deutschland & Österreich wechselte.
Secretly Group umfasst die Labels Dead Oceans, Jagjaguwar und Secretly Canadian, mit jüngsten Veröffentlichungen von Phoebe Bridgers, Khruangbin, Angel Olsen, Moses Sumney, serpentwithfeet und shame.

In a collaboration between Music Pool Berlin and Amplify we aim to explore various models of releasing music, with a label or without. Questions about how to find and work with a label, or how to release recorded music are among the frequently asked in both our programmes – and we want to take these FAQ as a starting point for this evening's discussion. What are the services that a label can and cannot provide? What to expect from a label? And how to find a label that fits well in the first place? At which point in my professional path should I start looking for a label? And what do I do if I don't find a label? And do I need to look for one anyway, or should I rather release my music myself? How to go about releasing music on my own? We will address these and related questions in a conversation with experienced artists and label makers:

Rabih Beani – Lebanese-born producer and DJ Rabih Beaini (formerly known as Morphosis) specializes in grainy, imaginative analogue techno. While his productions join the dots between raw, elementary electronica, and jazz, his Morphine label has put forward an equally forward-thinking selection of techno from the likes of Madteo, Hieroglyphic Being, and Anthony „Shake“ Shakir. Apart from his solo productions and DJ sets, Beani also works with the Upperground Orchestra, a multi-headed improvisational ensemble that explores the terrain between electronica, techno, and improvisational jazz. He served as producer for a retrospective collection of Buchla synth pioneer Charles Cohen and others of composer Pauline Oliveros, French mechanical-orchestra creator Pierre Bastien, and explosive Indonesian duo Senyawa.

Ziúr – Ziúr is producer from Berlin, with a background in the Berlin DIY scenes. She released her first mixtape /xuːx/ in 2015. Her debut album „U Feel Anything?“ was released in 2017 on the Planet Mu label. She stayed with Planet Mu also for her second album „ATØ“, released in late 2019. Ziúr is part of the Discwomen collective, participated in Peaches' remix album, organizes her own party series, and tours her energetic live sets to many festivals and clubs.

Marit Posch - Marit is a freelance Artist & Label & Project Manager based in Berlin. Having a law degree and a performance diploma opera/voice in her pockets, Marit started out working as Head of PR at the Berlin label BPitch Control, worked as a booking agent at Magnet Musik and also started to help Modeselektor with managing their career. In 2009, she set up Modeselektor’s label Monkeytown Records (and its sub labels 50WEAPONS and SSPB) and since then worked in pretty much every field of the label business: Label & Artist Management, PR, Online Marketing, Publishing as well as E-Commerce. She currently manages the artist CATNAPP, runs Alva Noto's label NOTON and oversees the album campaign for the French artist Rone on InFiné as an international label manager, besides working on diverse smaller projects as well. Since 2019, Marit has been part of NORIENT, a global network for global and multi local sounds and media culture, working as a Project Manager.

Max Boss (Easter) - Max Boss (along with writer Stine Omar) is one half of Easter, who place the deadpan delivery of riddling rhymes atop synthetic post-Eurodance beats, distilled into stark minimalism. Easter’s sonic identity is bolstered by a playfully clinical visual language – their 15 self-directed music videos show the sophisticated DIY aesthetic they have crafted, equally suitable for laptop screens as in white cubes. They have never released on a label.

This summer edition of the Music Pool evening series brings together a panel of artist-run and boutique record labels for an exchange and sharing of experiences. What are approaches for releasing music on a smaller scale, and with an artistic concept at the core? What are experiences of releasing music as artists?What should you think about when starting your own label? We will talk about the labels' different curatorial approaches, aesthetic deliberations, organizational strategies, as well as look into the business side of things.

The evening is meant to be of interest both as exchange for people already running their own labels, as well as inspiration and information for those considering to start their own label and releasing their own or other's music.

This workshop focuses on the business side of the music industry regarding the challenges as well as the rewards of running an independent label. How to secure digital and physical distribution deals, securing synch license deals, the challenges of pressing vinyl records, and how branding through social media should be a top priority for independent labels—these are among the many things that our tutor DJ Amir has deal with as a label owner and as a signed artist, the proper knowledge of which, of course, can help many an artist and business owner in the music industry avoid unnecessary pitfalls. Additionally, his extensive experience as an A&R has positioned him to speak with authority and to educate others on the process of talent scouting and how to manage artists.
