How can we stay connected, meet other musicians, and keep inspiration flowing, also during the cold months in the pandemic? With Music Pool Berlin, we have moved our Artist Meetup online. We offer you all a space to share music you are working on, to present your latest video, or to talk about a project you have in mind. To learn about what other musicians are working on, or projects that you may want to join, to find inspiration for your own practice, to make new connections. To get feedback from peers and ideas you may not have thought about yet.

Each Meet & Listen Online session has 6 slots à 10 minutes – for six musicians to share their songs, tracks or projects. The meeting room offers a whiteboard for all of you to share your contacts, links, and what you are offering and looking for. We offer space for you all to give feedback on each others work, to ask questions, to share experiences. Each session will be closed with a DJ set, while people are still mingling and connecting, so that is also a way to participate.

The Music Pool community evening will provide insights into the music scenes in Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines – from musical styles to organizational aspects. Potential ways of collaboration for Berlin based artists with the music scenes in Southeast Asia will also be a topic.

The evening is organized on the occasion of a group of female artists and cultural producers from Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand visiting Berlin and the Pop-Kultur festival, organized by Goethe Institute in cooperation with Missy Magazine.

Speakers:

Alyana Cabral (Manila, Philippines) is a musician, writer, and film score composer from Manila. For seven years, she has been performing all over the city as a singer and multi-instrumentalist for several bands. She is currently the vocalist and guitarist of garage folk outfit Ourselves the Elves, as well as keyboard and percussion player for psych rock group Shamanism. Her forays with sound art and electronic music fuel her experimental solo project, Teenage Granny. Alyana has made music for a handful of films, such as Cinema One Originals 2016 Best Film awardee, “2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten,” and Regal Entertainment’s horror film, “The Debutantes,” wherein she got nominated for best musical score by FAMAS 2018. When she goes home to her bedroom with just her guitar, she writes political songs for her folk project identity. Aside from performing, Alyana also organizes live shows, mostly (but not exclusively) for female musicians and female-fronted bands. She has recently founded Kababae Mong Tao, a multimedia platform aiming to empower women of all colors and expressions. Alyana believes in sisterhood solidarity, male involvement, faeries, woman-moon synchronicity, and the power of dreams.

Amanda Keisha Ang (Singapore)is known for her work behind Singaporean all-girl art and music crew ATTAGIRL! championing electronic music for women in Asia - on her own, Amanda has been quietly but actively pushing her own initiatives and shows. When she isn’t DJing or doing music promotion with her bass music collective BAOWBAOW, she spends her time teaching illustration, creating artwork for like-minded music aficionados, music journalism, learning tattoo and cooking. As a music lover and DJ, her palate spans across various genres of Classic House, Techno, Hip-hop, Soul, UK Garage, Dancehall, Grime, Footwork, Jungle and Drum & Bass. She’s played in various cities and festivals alongside names/collectives such as Discwoman, BaeTokyo, Mr Carmack, TOKiMONSTA, Madam X, and electronic music legends DJ Krush and RP Boo. Through travel and music she hopes that she can empower and lend support to other women of color like herself in the similar artistic fields.

Kartika Jahja (Jakarta, Indonesia) is a vocalist and songwriter with the group Tika & The Dissidents. The band is known to fuse different genres from punk, to trip hop, to jazz combined with Kartika’s defiant lyrics touching on issues from gender justice, sexuality, labour movement, to media literacy. As an activist Kartika has focused on the issue of gender and sexuality since 2012. In 2015 she founded The Bersama Project; a foundation that aims to promote gender equality through music and the arts. In July 2018, Kartika and her two partners opened an alternative art space called SELATAN.

Mich Dulce (Manila, Philippines)is a Filipina fashion designer, milliner and corsetiere by profession, specializing in the creation of ethical contemporary hats and headpieces with wholly sustainable traditional Philippine raw materials combined with traditional European millinery techniques. She is also the vocalist of The Male Gaze, a feminist riot grrrl band that aims to inform, provoke and challenge their audiences. Also a contemporary artist, Dulce’s practice as an artist has always been confessional and about her personal experiences as a woman and her reaction to the patriarchal social norms in the Philippines, reattributing and dissecting gender roles. Working with a variety of mediums (often involving stereotypically feminine craft), she builds immersive multi-sensory environments and installations that encourage the viewers to contribute to the work.

Food for thoughts: things we learnt at our Mental Health Community Evening with DBS Music (pt.1)

As you might already know since you've landed to this blog entry, or if you don't know already as this is your first time visiting this website, Music Pool Berlin is an organization that deals on a daily basis with the vast variety of topics concerning the professional lives of musicians - anything which is not the creative work per se: from insurance and taxes to working with labels and managing your own bookings to rights management. One way in which we do so, is via our monthly Community Evening events, in which we organize panels and talks on music and creativity related topics, inviting each time a different set of speakers, all professionally involved with different aspects of the music business.

Our June Community Evening was dedicated to a very delicate topic: mental health and creativity. Inspired by the reading of the Help Musicians UK survey, we decided to partner with dBs Music, a Berlin based music production and sound engeneering school who has in the latest months organized a series of events dedicated to the topic of mental health.

5 Things We Learnt at Our Music Pool Berlin Mental Health Panel

You sound unique. You're made from pure creative potential. You can stand alone or be part of a symphony. To the opportunistic music business, that makes you an instrument to be played; to over-pluck till destruct making sweet money music; to neglect to go out of tune. In its obdurate scheme, it is the necessary thumb to your melody – but that's just not true. Because you’rethe musician, and ultimately you are you.

It’s no secret: although it’s amazing to be professionally engaged with your passion, the very nature of the music industry brings with it a framework that makes us vulnerable as human beings. As Help Musicians UK’s recent study reported, musicians are three times more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety than the average (UK) population.

Factors at play include precariousness of living conditions, merging of personal identity with profession, working late and inconsistent hours, alcohol and drugs, heavy touring schedules and simply never switching off. But as we learnt at this year’s dBs Dialogues mental health series, coming together to talk about these issues – taking ownership of them, even – is the best way to bring about change.

Last month, we continued the conversation in a collaborative panel talk with Music Pool Berlin, an invaluable organisation which supports musicians with practical resources and advice. “When I read the study and heard that dBs Berlin was organizing an event series on the topic,” said our moderator, cultural producer and curator Andrea Goetzke, “I got the idea to also organise one of our Music Pool Berlin community evenings on the topic of mental health and music.”

Our fantastic panellists were: electronic artist Emika, artist manager and agency owner Andy Inglis, !K7 head of artist management and former label owner Rachael Patterson, and philosophical advisor and coach Florian Goldberg. Bringing together extensive knowledge from all corners of the music industry, they discussed the health issues that arise, how we can take better care of ourselves and others, and what we can do to turn detrimental working conditions and structural issues on their head.

You are not your music

You put your heart and soul into your music – we get it. But that does not mean you should be defined by it. As the Help Musicians UK report put it, the way that musicians come to embody their work, arguably “renders them particularly vulnerable.” It's the tipping point where a career becomes all-consuming, criticism turns personal, or a personal brand becomes a cage. But remember, you are a human first and a musician second.

As Emika pointed out, finding your brand is a great form of self-expression: “In the beginning, so much of it is about settling on an identity that you feel is yours.” But what happens when that identity becomes a feedback loop, or if you disassociate from it after it's brought you success? “That started to get really unstable for me,” she continued. “Getting internationally recognised for my music, I started to realise that I was surrounded by a lot of people I didn't understand.”

But in an industry where branding is everything, is there any way we combat this? According to Emika, it's all about keeping a distance: “Emika is like a glove,” she said. “I created certain guidelines that I could put on and take off.” One of the rules Emika is most strict about is not sharing anything personal online: “I don't focus on what I share with people around me; it's around my music.” And Andy agreed: “It's very healthy to be able to separate yourself from your public-facing career or identity, even if they are linked in every way.”

Be the cause, not the effect

Not feeling in control of your work or your life can be a great source of depression and anxiety for anyone. And in the music industry, facing pressure from managers and labels to relentlessly create, tour or live up to a certain sound, it's a feeling all too familiar. “If we are pushed to be just the effect [rather than the cause], and if we allow that, we start to feel bad,” Florian asserted. “To really understand what it means in your personal life – to ask where am I at the source of things? and where am I at the effect of things? – this is especially important for an artist.”

This is something that Emika has personally experienced. So anxious about an upcoming Glastonbury gig that she had to medicate in order to perform, Emika reflected, “I recognised that there was a lot of people around me that pushed me to do that and that I really needed to change my entire life.”

The best way to regain control over your life, Florian advised, is “for an individual is to ask, what can I do to change things where I am?” “For artists, it's good to make your own plan,” he continued, “then do it and follow it up and find the people who are willing to collaborate with you.” In the end, it's all about prioritising your own well-being. “If you keep your eyes on the prize, it really doesn't matter what comments people throw at you,” Emika added, “you have to just be focused on what you want and know why you're doing it.”

Record labels have always been central players at the core of the music industry, helping musicians and producers in their artistic development, strengthening scenes around peculiar styles and genres and working as a point of convergence for like – minded artists, cultural operators and music fans.

But... what exactly does a record label do? At this Music Pool Berlin Community Evening, we want to explore how the role of record labels has changed during the latest years, understand at what stage of an artist career does a label get involved and provide some useful tips for artists on what’s the best way to approach record labels. In the context of the Torstraßen Festival x Independent Label Market, we gathered together a mixed group of London and Berlin based music industry professionals, all ranging from diverse experiences and backgrounds but with a common independent approach, to help us uncover the issues above.

Confirmed Panellists:

Chrissie Niestroj/ Domino Recording Company / Domino Deutschland: Chrissie started out in the music industry in London after completing her BA with a dissertation about a new digital service provider: Spotify. Her first gig was with an online music PR company, where she developed an interest in social media management. When she moved on to Quest Management (Arcade Fire, Lykke Li, Marina & The Diamonds) Chrissie built relationships with the key digital players in the music market, seeking out new business models in the digital sphere. In 2014 she moved to Berlin and started working for indie label Domino, where she is a project manager and digital marketer. She also teaches a digital music module on the BA Music Business degree at BIMM Berlin.

Sofia Ilyas/ FLOAT: In 2015 Sofia Ilyas launched Float PR and from the offset gained high-profile clients such as Dishoom and Carhartt WIP. Sofia founded Float the record label in 2017 which focuses on music releases, events and clothing. For the labels launch event Sofia curated a evening centered around the piano combining jazz, dance and grime to an audience of over 600 at the Union Chapel. Sofia was previously at Erased Tapes for five years where she was an integral part of raising the profiles of artists such as Nils Frahm as well as the label. She has a monthly show on Soho Radio.

Monique Recknagel/ Sonic Pieces: Monique Recknagel is the owner of Sonic Pieces – a Berlin based boutique record label launched in 2009. Since then she has handpicked and -crafted over 30 releases from national and international artists working at the egde of contempory, classical and experimental music. Despite having an economic background, Monique always kept following her interest in music. After moving to Berlin in 2002 she started doing radio and later also arranged concerts. Starting the label wasn´t intentional, but perhaps an obvious step.

Rainer Scheerer/ SPRINGSTOFF: Rainer Scheerer is a Berliner Artist & Entrepreneur. His Music Label / Booking Agency SPRINGSTOFF is an Independent Music Company. Rainer is a member of the Sandbox Network. With his classical background he see music and performance art in a holistic way, not only to make money, but to create art and change how we see / feel / hear the world of music.

Drinks, music and networking can be enjoyed before and after the talk between the stalls of the market traders into the hallowed halls of the iconic Volksbühne Berlin.

The panel will precede Torstraßen Festival’s final (and biggest) concert, which takes place on the Volksbühne stage and will feature rising Australian superstar Alex Cameron, the toast of Canadian critics Lido Pimienta and Berlin’s favourite Italo Pop duo Itaca. Music and Mental Health – Music Pool Berlin Community Evening x dBs Music

While it’s great to be work in music, be a musician, and spend your time engaging with your passion (a privilege many people don't share), the very nature of the music business oftenbrings with it a framework that makes us vulnerable as humans. A recent study commissioned by Help Musicians UK reported that musicians are three times more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety than the average population (in the UK).

Factors at play can be - precariousness of living conditions, merging of personal identity with profession (and never switching off), being constantly exposed to feedback (that often connects directly to personal identity), working late and inconsistent hours, alcohol and drugs, heavy touring schedules (incompatible with even a flu) and a focus entirely on work rather than taking time out for yourself as a human being. And while it may be that music is a great way to work through the issues of living in the world, this can still leave you vulnerable as a person.

Many of these things apply to other professions, as well as to just being a human and figuring out your way. At this Music Pool x dBs Music community evening, we want to discuss the mental health issues that particularly arise in the music business, and to think together what can be done to take better care of ourselves and our colleagues and friends, and to change the working conditions and structural issues in the long run.

Andy Inglis – is an Artist Manager, Tour Manager, Conference Manager, Lecturer, Mentor, and frequent commentator on the Music Industries. He prioritises the mental and physical health of his clients over any other consideration.

Rachael Patterson - Formerly a Label Manager at [PIAS]’ London office, Rachael moved to Berlin to take the position of !K7’s Head of Sales and Marketing for their in-house releases and priority Label Services campaigns, with responsibility for international marketing and project management. She is now head of Artist Management for the Group, bringing in new clients and representing her own roster, and oversees a team of day-to-day managers and the long-term strategy for their respective clients – including Tricky and Mykki Blanco.

Emika - Brings bold new tendencies to a world of avant garde classicism, popular song and contemporary electronic minimalism. Having signed to Ninja Tune for her first two albums, Emika (2011) and Dva (2013), Emika established her own, eponymous label in 2015. Flow Machines and other "tools" promise nothing less than revolutionising music production by "managing" creative processes, "objectifying" styles, or acting as "artificial muse." With the next wave of technological innovation, traditional interfaces are likely to be eliminated, opening up completely new possibilities for music makers to compose, produce and perform music.

Machine listening: Applications of AI to Music

This talk examines present and future impacts of machine learning applied to music, with a focus on understanding and using machine learning in the music making process.
AI researchers are rapidly proposing new applications at every stage of the musical process. On the creative side, bots and intelligent assistants help musicians fluidly manage their own compositional tools and sound libraries. Also, novel musical instruments imbued with smart sensors and circuits greatly lower the barrier of entry to production and performance, expanding the ways we interface with our instruments. And enabling richer and more direct interaction between musicians and their fans as well. Experimental techniques for synthesizing audio and imitating styles on-demand are still in their infancy, but could one day revolutionize production and composition from the ground up. On the curatorial and business side, music recommender systems are beginning to scan the "long tail" of large music collections and automatically make accurate inferences about who is likely to listen to or buy those songs.
As algorithms invade every aspect of the music creation process, we are asked to reconsider what it means to be a musician in the 21st century.

"Three Cities: International Commission" performing in Berlin

What happens when three musicians from different backgrounds get together and collaborate?

"Three Cities" is a new international commission that links Music Pool Berlin (Berlin) with Le Fil (Saint-Étienne) and Brighter Sound (Manchester). The project creates a unique opportunity for independent musicians to extend their network in the music industry and create new original music.

On the first edition of "Three Cities", musicians Martha Rose (Berlin), Pailette (St. Etienne) and Shunya (Manchester) have come up with new jointly created compositions via a three steps process: jamming together in Manchester, recording in St. Etienne, and performing in Berlin.

On March 15th 2018, the trio had the chance to present the product of their joint effort, together with a glimpse of their own solo work, at the Music Pool Berlin "Community Evening" held at Hangar 49 in Berlin.

Prior to the performance, the three protagonists of "Three Cities" had the chance to discuss with other fellow musicians their experiences with international collaborations, and share their impressions on collaborative projects, exchanges or residency programmes in different contexts. During the panel, Martha Rose, Pailette and Shunya were joined by electronic musicians, DJs and cultural activists Gebrüder Teichmann (aka Andi und Hannes Teichmann), Berlin based indie multi-instrumentalist Johanna Amelie, and Allie ( aka Florian Boss).
