Artist Talk: Creating between Cultures

This Artist Talk will be a conversation with between Gowri Jayakumar / Pulpy Shilpy from Pune/India, who currently participates in a Border Movement residency in Berlin, and Ramsha Shakeel, who moved from Pakistan to Canada and currently lives in Berlin. We want to learn about their respective (and different) artistic practices and their creative paths. Pulpy Shilpy puts the tags „Cyborg Sex Funk“ to her pop sounds; Ramsha Shakeel is an experimental musician and interdisciplinary artist. A particular angle of the conversation will be their navigation between South Asian and Western musical traditions and also cultural backgrounds and audiences, and how moving and migrating between different sound and cultural worlds impacts their creative path.

Pulpy Shilpy: Soundcloud
Pulpy Shilpy is the electronic avatar of Pune-based singer/songwriter Gowri Jayakumar, who also fronted freak funk quartet Run Pussy Run. With her roots in soul, jazz and wordplay, she is known for her unique and versatile methods of storytelling and performance. Gowri was a journalist for seven years (2006-2012) after which she studied music for ten months at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music. She began playing guitar at the age of 15, and that’s how it all began. Pulpy Shilpy is currently engaged in an artist residency with Border Movement in Berlin.

Ramsha Shakeel: Bandcamp, Soundcloud
Self-taught producer and multi-instrumentalist Ramsha Shakeel has spent her career crafting ambient drones that approximate the celestial. Having also created crossdisciplinary works intersecting experimental music, interactive art and new media, her sound inspires visions of bright constellations and otherworldly beams of light. On her LP’s Daastanemarg and Veils, she renders space’s boundless grandeur and freezing darkness equally, invoking distortion, swirling atmospherics and more. Unless you have Elon Musk on speed dial, music like Ramsha’s remains one of the best ways to imagine a trip to Mars.

The conversation will be moderated by a percussionist, composer, producer & curator Renu Hossain.
RENU (Renu Hossain) is a British-Bengali, Berlin and London based artist. She is a composer, producer, tabla-player, percussionist and curator. Originally a percussionist for – Grace Jones, State of Bengal, Fun_da_mental, MIKA, Alabama 3 and Tunde Jegede.

This talk is organized in collaboration with Border Movement (merging electronic music from South Asia and Germany) and NOW / Night School (organizing talks and concerts for/with female identifying, trans and non-binary inclusive, queer, POC activists, experts and artists in the field of music).

Jamila Woods is a Chicago-bred soul singer, songwriter, poet, educator and organizer. Her work focuses on themes of blackness and womanhood, with recurring emphases on self-love and the city of Chicago. Woods is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and Brown University, where she received a BA in Africana Studies and Theater & Performance Studies. Her new album Legacy! Legacy! - to be released in May via Jagjaguwar this year – builds with each song a sonic and lyrical monument to historical black and brown icons of literature, art and music, and how these icons tried to push beyond the margins a country had assigned to them.

In a conversation with writer and journalist Christine Kakaire, Jamila Woods will give an insight into her creative and writing process. For example, they will look into some of the inspirations and lyrics of her three album singles ZORA, EARTHA, and GIOVANNI. Black history and ancestry being an important theme in Jamila's practice, the conversation will explore the importance of artistic as well as familial legacy and lineage in her work. And connected to that - how ancestry influences her own sense of identity and how that shows up in her work. The talk discusses how Jamila Woods uses music and poetry as her contribution to a conversation on blackness and feminism, how she connects art, community building and political work, and how she uses language in an empowering way.

Peter Edward Clarke, aka., Budgie, is one of the world's most prominent drummers. He has had a long professional career, starting out in 1978 as the drummer for The Slits, before joining Siouxsie and the Banshees and forming their side project, The Creatures. Budgie has alsoworked with the Velvet Underground's John Cale, Juno Reactor, Efterklang, CocoRosie and former Kodo drummer, Leonard Eto. We will talk with Budgie about his life, living and working as a professional musician, as well as his approach to music and drumming.

This Music Pool Berlin evening is a collaboration with BIMM Berlin .

Julian Weber (music journalist, taz. die tageszeitung) will do the public interview.

Saturday, 23.05: Music Pool Berlin Community Evening #16 - Artist Talk: Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids

The artist talk gives you the chance to talk to some of the last true masters from the heydays of "cosmic" jazz. Led by the restless Idris Ackamoor a bunch of pupils of free jazz legend Cecil Taylor at Ohio's Antioch College used a student grant to escape the US to travel to europe and then all over Africa as early as 1972, playing and recording with local musicians wherever possible. Back in the US, The Pyramids incorporated their African experience into a music which is as unique as visionary, releasing three albums in private press before disbanding in 1977. Almost thirty years later the musicians regrouped, encouraged by the fact that new audiences and a new generation of especially electronic music producers had enthusiastically embraced their "old" music - The Pyramids have been cited as a major influence and sampled by luminaries like Flying Lotus, Caribou, Gilles Peterson and Bonobo.

The public interview gives in insight into the 40 year long music careers of the band, as well as the band's approaches to music in its traditional sense - to create ceremony and as a vehicle to pass on knowledge and history of the tribe/community. The Pyramids take inspiration from a time when there was no distinction between the performers and the audience, all being part in creating music. Transforming this tradition into the 21st century, the Pyramids encourage new creative ways of engaging the public and blurring the lines between professional and non-professional musicians.

The Music Pool Community evening takes place at the end of the day of a 1,5 day practical workshop to explore new spaces for performances and make music with the Pyramids. The full workshop is made possible through a collaboration between NK ,planet rock , Torstraßen Festival and BIMM.
