Um als Künstler:in erfolgreich zu sein, ist eine starke Strategie, wie Artists die Beziehungen zu Fans, Audience und Partner:innen gestalten, eines der grundlegendsten Elemente Deiner Musikkarriere. Die größten Künstler:innen der Welt zeigen, dass der Weg an die Spitze kein Zufall ist, sondern vielmehr Resultat harter Arbeit ist, die eine klare Grundlage, eine strategische Gesamtperspektive und intelligentes Handeln für eine starke Artist Brand erfordert. Im Rahmen des Workshops It’s All About The Brand: Das „How To" zum nachhaltigen Aufbau Deiner Künstler:innenmarke lernen die Teilnehmenden, was eine Markenstrategie für Künstler:innen ist, wie man eine solche Strategie erarbeitet und schließlich zum Leben erweckt.

Der Workshop ist in zwei Teile gegliedert: Im ersten Teil werden zunächst unterschiedlichen Begriffe aus den Bereichen Marke, Identität und Strategie unterschieden, gefolgt von einer Einführung in das Grundkonzept der Markenstrategie für Künstler:innen im Allgemeinen, sowie in die Zielgruppe und die Notwendigkeit eine Strategie zu entwickeln. Zum Abschluss des ersten Teils wird das Artist Brand Canvas (ABC) als praktisches Instrument für die Entwicklung vonMarkenstrategien für Künstler:innen vorgestellt.

Der zweite Teil konzentriert sich auf den Prozess der Entwicklung der Strategie Artist Brand. Teilnehmende werden zunächst mit der internen und externen Situationsanalyse, sowie der SWOT-Analyse vertraut gemacht. Um den Grundstein für den eigentlichen Strategieentwicklungsprozess zu legen, werden die Teilnehmenden in die Konzepte des Golden Circle von Sinek sowie in die Identitätsbasierte Markenführung von Burmann als zugrunde liegende wissenschaftliche Modelle eingeführt. Nach Abschluss der Definition der Identität der Künstler:innenmarke werden Messaging und Story der Brand entwickelt und auf die passenden Brand Touchpoints abgestimmt.

In this Music Pool community late afternoon, we look into current developments in generative AI technologies and their applications in music, and discuss them from the perspective of musicians. What does a current reality check look like? What changes?

The session will have two sections:

One section will explore the practical and creative uses of generative AI as a musician. Using genAI for AI-human co-creation and expanding creativity, and finding ways to work and deal with the AI black box. We will consider the usage of big platforms and commercial tools versus using custom software.

And one section will explore the regulatory, legal and financial questions concerning generative AI from musicians' perspectives. When media become more and more interactive and fluid with generative AI, how does that change ideas of authorship and copyright? When every song is at the same time an instrument for users to build on and work with, what new organizational frameworks do we need for creative economies? And how do music platforms use generative AI? What kind of technologies are currently being developed, and who drives their developments and what interests shape them?

We look forward to our conversation with:

Zachary Cooper (Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute | Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) is a legal scholar, filmmaker and musician, whose research programme focuses on techno-regulatory incoherence when applying copyright law to emerging forms of Generative AI-enabled media. He examines the ways in which Generative AI technologies are able to, sometimes subtly, subvert and confound foundational legal tenets, and how techno-regulatory incoherence is exploited to emancipate emergent tech from the control of the law. He served as Co-Editor of the European Journal of Law and Technology and as Editor-In-Chief of the Amsterdam Law Forum. He recently completed a research programme at the Weizenbaum Institute where he organised an international workshop bringing together leading IP scholars and creative GenAI pioneers to bridge gaps in contemporary scholarship with near-future-state technology.

Leslie García (Microhm) - is an experimental sound artist, electronic music producer, and creative technologist, whose work bridges the worlds of contemporary art and electronic music. Through installations, performances, and sonic explorations, she investigates the intersections between sound, science, and technology. Her moniker Microhm is a sonic exploration of a plethora of genres and experimental electronics, weaving deep textures and pulsating rhythms. With releases on Infinite Machine, Terminal, Static Discos, Umor Rex, and Detroit Underground, her work bridges club dynamics with immersive soundscapes, shaping a unique narrative within contemporary electronic music.

The fundamentals of getting your music heard by a record label

This workshop addresses one of the most important questions songwriters, producers and musicians ask themselves - what do I need to do to get my music heard? How can your art stand out from the crowd when looking for a label or a distributor?

Certainly, there are no guarantees of success or a secret recipe - but there are many aspects to consider to increase your chances of being unique in an industry that's overloaded with talent. With certain steps, you can ensure that a desired target group hears your music - be it label A&R, music distributors, booking agencies or just average music consumers.

Creative aspects, technical aspects as well as topics such as distribution and marketing are covered. Based on the topics and knowledge taught in this three-part workshop, you should be able to develop a basic strategy for the release of your music and achieve results.

Steven Ford aka Bruno Pronsato has been active in the global electronic music scene since 2003, with numerous albums and EPs on labels from DFA to Perlon. He has collaborated with Liars’ Angus Andrew and produced albums for Ellen Allien and Kool Keith, the latter of which he mixed with Grammy-winning engineer Joseph Holguin. He has played alongside Ricardo Villalobos in his super group Narod Niki. He also performs (and records) with Thomas Melchior as Melchior & Pronsato. RA awarded his Why Can’t We Be Like Us LP a rare perfect 5/5, with Pitchfork then declaring his follow-up, Lovers Do, a ‘massive and striking statement.’ Pitchfork also nominated “Since We Last Met,” his track with Sergio Giorgini as NDF (on DFA) as one of their ‘Tracks Of The Decade So Far,’ and he has had features in The Wire, RA, XLR8R and FACT, amongst others. I'm originally from Israel and I live in Berlin for the past 9 years.

The workshop is an introduction to the music business, in it you will learn the different terms used in the industry, the different roles of music companies, and the way the money flows. Hopefully to you.

- Please explain to our community why they should book your workshop
I was building this workshop with the young me in mind, this is the kind of information I would like to have had when I wad starting my career as a young musician. The music business is a complicated place and it is ever-changing, and fast! This workshop will help you see things clearly as you navigate in this world.

- How did you become a music business expert?
An expert is a big word, however I would say there are a few reasons why I am a good person to give this workshop:

I have 17 years of experience as a musician and producer and 8 years from them are also as a music company owner as Management, a record label, a publisher and a booker.
I am a person who is very interested in sharing and passing on my knowledge to more people in order to help them avoid my past mistakes and become better.
I am very interested in the power imbalance and structures of the music business and am very much interested in trying to help shif the power from the music companies to the artists hands or at least to share it equally.
I am one of the founders of Tzlilim, the Israeli musicians union. We established it in order to help change the industry from the inside and give support to the musicians.

- Why is the topic important?
There are many reasons why the topics we will be touching on are important to you, but to name a few:

It will make you more knowledgeable in your field, which is something that musicians often underestimate, resulting often with bad consequences for them.
It will give you tools to use in your day to day work as a musician.
It will help you understand better how money is being made in the industry and perhaps how you could also make some if it :)

Daniel is a musician and cultural manager. It became apparent early on that he is passionate about being on stage but also likes to pull the strings behind the scenes. After his studies in musicology he started his own business, played shows as a musician in front of 10-10,000 music enthusiasts, in the orchestra pit of Berlin theaters or on small stages with musical readings. As a sideman on the guitar, he continues to travel a lot and enjoys being involved in various pop projects: sometimes as a producer, sometimes as an arranger, musical director or cowriter. In January 2022, thanks to the Neustart Kultur grant, he was able to record his own and independent artistic creation in the form of a live studio session in sound and vision. The practical experience as a musician proved to be an ideal complement to his work as a cultural manager. As an "enabler" of culture, he has managed non-profit youth music projects as well as vernissages or orchestral productions at the Elbphilharmonie. One of his most important management activities was his work as artist manager for the multi-award-winning jazz drummer and composer Diego Pinera, which lasted almost 10 years. The highlight of this collaboration was certainly the awarding of the ECHO Jazz and the nomination as Grammy Nominee. Daniel was allowed to supervise various international high-profile productions for Diego Pinera over the years. Their common professional path ended in 2020 in best friendship. In order to put the finishing touches on his professional experience gathered from 15 years, he completed an additional degree in cultural management in 2019. He is currently organizing the Berlin Jazztreff on behalf of the Landesmusikrat Berlin for the sixth year in a row and is involved in the development of a complementary service, the Brexit Infopoint, as part of the Touring Artists advisory network since August 2022. To be able to work as a freelance artist in Germany, you have to consider a lot. Germany is known to be quite bureaucratically organized and you have to follow a lot of laws and paperwork.

This can be daunting at first, especially for newcomers to Germany. On the other hand, it is exactly this framework that helps you to secure yourself socially and economically and provides a solid basis for your freelance work.

This workshop, which we will conduct together with our partners from Touring Artists, will give you an overview of all the requirements, peculiarities and general conditions that you have to consider as a freelancer in Germany and what all the preceding steps you have to take in order to be allowed to live and work in Germany at all.
