Get your ticket here.

Doors: 19:00

Conversation and Q&A: 19:30

Networking in the bar: 21:00

In this artist talk with Sam Slater we are curious to talk about experiences in making music in collaboration - for film, games, installations or theatre. What does it mean to make music and sound in resonance with another piece of art or creative work? How do you approach composition and sound design differently in collaboration with different media and productions? Like for example – what are the differences in working for a film or for a game? And what works differently at the different levels of budget and scope? How to approach creative practice and creative strategy in long term projects?

How do you approach collaboration? How do you see collaboration as a creative practice? How much do you see your work as a service or your own artistic work? What are best practices of communication, so that all involved understand each other well?

How do you approach composing and sound design for different productions creatively? What are different work processes?

What would be your recommendations for artists who seek to work for film and games and other productions? Where to start and which skills are important?

There will be space for your questions as well, so do come prepared.

*

Sam Slater, a two-time Grammy Award-winning composer, sound designer, and music producer, is renowned for creating immersive soundscapes in various mediums such as installations, games, films, and stage productions. Notably, he won multiple Grammy Awards for his roles as score producer and musical sound designer for "Joker" and "Chernobyl." He also received accolades like an SCL Award for 'Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media' for "Battlefield 2042" and an Icelandic Music Award for 'Producer of the Year.'

Additionally, he scored projects like "Guerrillas" and "The River Between Us" in 2020, and in 2021, he collaborated with Hildur Guðnadóttir on the soundtrack for EA Games' "Battlefield 2042." In 2022, he produced the score for "A Haunting in Venice" and scored the Bohpal gas disaster for the Netflix series "The Railway Men." Slater has released solo records with Iceland’s celebrated label, Bedroom Community and premiered an immersive mixed-media installation called "Vandals" in collaboration with visual artist Theresa Baumgartner at CTM Festival in 2022.

Always aspiring to be versatile and challenged, Slater has showcased his creativity through live performances, both solo and in collaborative projects like OSMIUM, a project focussed on self-built instruments and robotics. He toured a live immersive performance of Chernobyl in 2019. Slater's compositions have been featured in performances by prestigious orchestras like the LA Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. His musical journey began in his teens with record production, followed by studies in Experimental Composition at Leeds University. He started his professional career in Germany, initially collaborating with Johann Johannsson as a principal musical sound designer and creative engineer. Slater consistently engages with the experimental music scene, collaborating with friends and artists such as James Ginzburg, Hildur Gudnadottir, Rully Shabara, and others in Europe and beyond.

Call for Artists: Sound Lab for Fluid Ways of Knowing

The Sound Lab for Fluid Ways of Knowing brings together eight artists working with sound and language, living in Ghana and Germany, to engage in a collective process of artistic research on artistic methodologies of fluidity, orality, non-duality, of process and improvisation.

We have a free spot in the group, and with this call would like to invite artists with a particular interest in an open process of artistic research, in considering “fluid ways of knowing”, and in working collectively.

Project Schedule

an online preparatory phase Nov 22 - Jan 23 (with 3-4 online meetings)

a week of in-person Sound Lab with internal and public moments of performance, conversation and workshop at the Brechtfestival in Augsburg, 11 - 18 February 2023

a week of in-person Sound Lab in Accra, also with internal and public parts, in late April/early May 2023, exact date tbd

With “ways of knowing” we refer to

different epistemologies, oral ways of passing on history, ways of being intellectual beyond academia, knowledge gained in lived experience, embodied knowledge, to the many ways of making sense. We speak to knowledge produced in the working class, in a process of transitioning gender, in a “queer art of failure”, in the many different regions in the global South, in lived experiences of migration.

what can be known through the artistic practices working with sound and language of the participating artists. For example in practices of moving beyond rigid grammars towards methodologies of queering and bending, of being in the moment and reacting to the process. Sound is also an artistic medium that is accessible for many and that has the potential to communicate and connect across differences.

and there is the question of how art contributes to becoming aware of one’s situatedness and agency in society, within capitalism and related structures of power (which relates to the theme of next year’s Brechtfestival).

Participating in the project will include - engaging in an open process of artistic research, considering and working on the topics through your and everyone else’s practices, preparing one public workshop or related activity, collectively working on a performance that will happen on the last day of the lab respectively in Augsburg and Accra. Small additional performances and public interventions are possible. An artist fee and all travel expenses will be paid.

To apply: If this resonates with you and your practice, you are based in Germany, and you are available for all three phases of the project (about 3 weeks overall), please send us a brief email outlining how you see your practice relating to the project and why you are interested, along with a link to your work, by 14 November: fluidwaysofknowing [at] gmail.com

The project is co-organized by Okhiogbe Omonblanks Omonhinmin / TAC-Org and Andrea Goetzke, hosted and administered by all2gethernow e.V., and co-funded by the Brechtfestival Augsburg and the TURN2 Fund (Bundeskulturstiftung).

This project is hosted by all2gethernow e.V., the association that also organizes Music Pool Berlin.

collaboration

Sound Lab

Ways of Knowing

From the perspectives of the invited speakers, we are curious to learn about currently exciting artists and musical styles in the different regions east of Berlin, in the underground and the mainstream. How do networks and communication work between regions, and which profiles and publications to follow in order to learn more about artists in Eastern Europe? We aim to also find out how to go about touring east of Berlin, as well as inviting Eastern European artists over to local Berlin/German concerts and parties. And what are existing interesting musical collaborations and projects that bring scenes together? There will also be space for your specific questions about making exchanges with Eastern European music scenes happen.
